My opinion:
You're over-reacting. These reports come out every year. Salmonella is everywhere.

Honestly, some store bought eggs contain it. Ever see the disclaimer on menus in restaurants about under-cooked eggs and meat? This is why. At one time they tried to legislate no dippy eggs be served because of it.

Wash hands, cook meat, go on with your life. IF your new birds had it, I think it will spread, but it really isn't that big an issue. They could just as well get it from wild birds or the soul

Chalk it up as slow news day.

Just my opinion, but I surround myself with dirt to build a naturally strong immune system. I avoid sanitizers and stick with old fashioned soap and water.

X2.
Soap and water works for me...
Salmonella is all over the place, best defense is allowing your birds and yourselves to have a good immune system.
I bought birds from Mt Healthy last year (also a reported outbreak source) and this year... and haven't had a sick bird or person as a result....

Would the outbreak affect ducks. I got my first 3 from TSC and came from the same hatchery. Now 5 weeks all, seems fine...runny poo sometimes but I was told it is bc they drink so much water. They are are very chatty, no signs of droopiness or listlessness...I am bringing the rest of my flock in a couple weeks (chicks and ducks from another hatchery) and just want to ma)e sure is safe before I do.

Anyone interested in two week old turkey poults? I have 2 black spanish, 1 sweetgrass and 1 narragansett mix. Take all for $25. I need to thin my flocks out. PM if you're interested

Here they are when they just hatched. Narragansett isn't in this pic. That's a bourbon red in there.

I agree with CC. Salmonella is an old disease and like E. coli, it's everywhere. There are some strains that are more virulent than the garden variety (literally, I bet you'd find Salmonella and E coli in every gram of garden soil, along with Botulism. Our environment is rife with nasty things, yet people survive anyway. It's because we have an immune system and so small quantities are deal with swiftly. The quantity needed to overwhelm our defenses depends on the strain. Soap is extremely effective in removing bacteria, and removing them is better than trying to just kill them.

Keep you chickens, quarantine new ones, and watch for signs of problems. Chances are they are already highly immune to many strains of Salmonella. You will be too, because of the regular stream of bacteria that make it past the soap for your immune system to respond to.

I had salmonella as a child. I don't remember it being a party, but it wasn't the worst medical problem I've ever had. Not life threatening unless you have a compromised immune system.

Had to cull a 3 week old silkie chick with a crossed beak yesterday. I really, really, hate this part of keeping poultry. It ranks up there with a bad decision costing the life of a bird. I know this wasn't my fault, but I still feel bad.

GM all:

Checked on my broody this morning and found a chick on the coop floor....got out from under her and couldn't get back...really hope something else hatches so I can remove the extra dozen my other marans deposited under her...

Also went to Pickering Valley feed....and they did have three CCL girls as well as BBWs, White Migits, Seabrights, frizzle Cochins, a bunch of ducks and a pretty big selection of other chooks...

I hate this thread. Just when I talk myself out of one animal, someone offers another! I really really want those poults, Avlana! I just know I shouldn't. I am still struggling with not hatching chivken eggs, and a friend of dh has kittens. DH has been telling me to get goats lately.

Here are some pics :)
This is lucky :)

I find this to be the hardest part of keeping any animals

If they would be closer, I would of snatched them up as soon as the post went up.
