Hey everyone!
My husband just got home from being out of town for 4 weeks, needless to say the kids and i haven't left him alone long enough to get online.
Hello to all the newbies, it's always exciting to get into a new "hobby" (hoarding!)

On another note, anyone looking for New Hampshire red roosters? I need to move 4 roosters (one is nhr x dominique) ASAP. They are about a year old, good birds just need to move them on. I've processed 2 of them and have no more room for stock in the freezer. I've posted them on craigslist, but some responses i got were ridiculous- i'm not wasting MY time to google directions/ "How fare are you away from Hamburg?" I don't know, GOOGLE IT!

LOL, I hear you about the CL postings. If you want to meet some "strange" people, offer free animals of any kind. I always charge money now, just to know they are serious and normal.

I've got extra New Hampshire roos also, so I can't help you out there. I wish I could find someone local to process our extra roos. Even better if they would take 2 live and give me back 1 processed.

I'm sure it's the same guy that wanted me to meet him halfway for 10 or 15. And I only wanted $1 each. Wouldn't even pay for gas money.

I'm asking $10 for 3 5 week olds. Br and light brahma. Is that too much?

Don't you just love it when they choose to sleep where they want to despite your best efforts?

Speaking of which, I've come to a point where I need to decide what I'm going to do with my girls.

I have a good solid water and weather proof coop where the grown up chickens sleep. There are two roosts in there, one in front and one in back. Everybody but the Buff Orpigton line up on the front roost. I gave 3 chickens to my Sis-in-Law this past weekend, freeing up more space on that front roost. So I'd thought the Buff would move up there. Nope, she still sleeps on the back roost all alone. Silly thing.

Which brings me to my problem... I have 6 bantams and 2 Dark Brahma chicks, all around 8 wks old. They've been growing up in the little "quail apartment" on the other side of the run. It is a small 48" deep X 30" wide X 36" high raised and enclosed area to the left of the main coop with an enclosed walkway between the two areas.

It has a little tiny "coop" at the back of it that the chicks had been using up until a few days ago. As the Brahmas are now too big to fit in the little quail sized doorway and I'd made room in the main coop for them I was going to try and get everybody to use the big coop. For warmth reasons in the winter.

The babies do all move back and forth between the two coop areas and have free run of the whole run area and yard with the bigger girls and everyone gets along fine. Problems have arisin the past two nights, however. I blocked off the apartment area right before dark when they'd normally all go up to roost in the hopes that the babies would go in with the big girls and all get comfy together. The babies DO go into the big coop but just snuggle down in a corner on the floor instead of using the nice mostly empty roost in the back. Last night I tried putting them up there. The moment I put the first Brahma chick on the roost my silly Buff (the only one who uses that roost) puffs up to basketball size and strikes like a snake. She caught my finger instead of the baby and wow! did that hurt!

So, in the big coop the babies just snuggle on the floor rather than face the biting basketball on the roost.

If I don't close off the apartment, however, they all jump up onto the two crisscrossing roosts in the upper area of the apartment and snuggle down into a big fluffy ball of feathers and go to sleep. I'd leave them there but for two main concerns. One, two of those "bantams" are actually my Brahma chicks. I can't imagine how this arrangement is going to work out long term when they are 10 to 15 lbs and still trying to snuggle up there with the bantams. And most importantly, the apartment is not fully enclosed. It has a solid water proof roof that it shares with the rest of the run area and main coop. The back wall is closed off on the bottom by the old quail coop and the outer wall is a solid piece of beadboard. But the floor, front and inside wall that faces the main coop are all open hardware cloth and chicken wire. I'm now trying to figure out if I leave it as is for the summer and leave them choose to sleep in there if they want, is it ok? And I guess I could just work on enclosing the front bottom and inside wall and make it into a full blown mini coop for the winter. I still don't know if I should try to make the Brahmas go into the coop with the full sized chickens or leave them in there with the bantams to keep them warm.

Here's a couple of pics of the little apartment where they all want to roost to sleep at night to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Katt:

Think fisher had the smarter response, but, from my limited experience, there is not any way to know how chooks will behave on a given day....mine have me totally confused most of the time...the only thing that's regular is their response to a coffee can of scratch.....now that the rain has stopped, time for some folgers.....

I know! There's some weird ones on there, just recently i saw an add for a job for "professional cuddling" or something like that. Whhhaaattt?? I hope you find someone local that can process for you, or teach. I lucked out when i was able to hook up with wingstone and learned from her, it was a great help.

That's ridiculous! If i plan on being near you, maybe. If your asking me to meet or come to you, absolutely not (especially since they are FREE!)

I don't think so. I've only ordered chicks offline and of course got roped into some chicks at TSC.

yep...responded to a 'free' posting for book shelves....after saying I would pick them up...informs me a whole was cut in the back of one to allow access to a thermostat....its just grist for the mill..CL imho is not worth the angst.....

Thanks! I miss "chick tv", my subscription ran out and now I'm left with "Hens gone wild". That's certainly entertaining too. My leghorn will jump straight up and even over another chicken if the dog barks and spooks her. Unfortunately, she cane easily fly-jump onto the top of the fence... That's awesome! Mine enjoyed the hosta and the Bleeding heart I put in last year. Poo. Looking today on Craigslist for some cheap fencing to put around my raised gardens. I may have lost the battle, but I will not lose the war!
LizardCat- hey, I found the blog that has the "layered-gardening"..*.Homestead Honey....This is for any & everyone..there is so much info in some of these blogs!! Hope everyone is staying dry, small ponds are starting to form around the yard..I really hope this rain eases up soon..The broody(Hen-Bree) and the chicks are running out of dry space even under the tarps... good luck on your on that fencing!!....I have a question on the 'bleeding heart'...i thought that all parts of that were poisonous:confused: ...can chickens eat that? IDK...
They haven't died yet and it's been a week..... Although, they were not big plants for sure, and I'm sure they won't come back next year now...
The disadvantage of not having cable is that I missed this cute ad war:
But now I really don't want a Jaguar.
That was hilarious! Kudos to their marketing department!
Cars. Gardens. ARRGH. Today my wife went off to pick up her boss (Because the Boss' car is in the shop) so they could go off to work at one of their clients. As I'm getting dressed to head into the hospital, I get a call. "Hon, the car stopped on the road near Mostardi's." So off come the dress slacks, and on go the dirty jeans. And out come the gloves, tools, and bruised knuckles which I use to repair her car so they can get to the client's place and get that garden done! Things I learned today: - Fermenting plums that you forgot about in your jeep for a week are a little stinky. - Chickens like fermented plums. And squishy bananas. - Core prices on alternators have gone up. ($80 for a core? There's not THAT much copper in there.) - The Nissan GA16 engine DOES have a belt tensioner adjust. And now I know where it is. - To change an alternator on a GA16, you should remove the following items to make enough room: . Upper Radiator Hose . Passenger Side Fan - Your back will hurt after hunching over the front of a car that long. On the plus side, this being the third time I've done an alternator on a sentra, it only took me 3 hours to get the job done. :) And unlike last time, I didn't shred the belt. YAY!
Sounds like you learned a lot today. That's always groovy!:thumbsup
I gave my broody 5 RIR chicks today because she only hatched one chick from her shipped eggs. Here is my favorite picture from this afternoon:
That is SO cute!!

Welcome!!!
Yup, every Saturday is "graduation day" for someone. Being a hunter, you should have just looked at him and said "my husband is such a good shot that the ducks just voluntarily give up"

I've seen that cuddling thing too. I wonder if it's a scam to get women into trafficking... Hope not. :)
