Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

My big mouth got me in doo-doo again.

You see I have 2 brothers who I am always preaching to about what they eat, literally they live on frozen dinners, I think that is the only aisle they can find in the store.

Well they thru it all back at me and challenged me to eat nothing but what I grow or raise for the entire month of June,,,, when it comes to the brothers, I can not back down from a challenge, and if I do this, they are gonna take my place in the tobacco field this year.

Help...
The garden is not gonna be producing much till then, and I cannot live on chicken alone....I did mention to them that I will not give up my morning coffee, they made an exception for that only since they know me, without coffee

I can only buy things that I can guarantee chemical free since that is what I preach to them all the time.

I made this bet on memorial day, and now that I have had time to think about it, this could be harder than thought, even my water is not chemical free, you can smell the chlorine in it.

can you buy some nice organic potatoes? lots of stuff you can do with potato and eggs..................

mashed potato, baked potato, hash browns, potato in a stew.....

sweet potato

quail and bacon?

strawberries
bananas
lettuce
peppers
tomatoes
onions

nuts

can you buy flour..........so you can bake some bread items?

does it all have to be what you grow or just healthy chemical free?

Want some Walleye or Yellow Perch? PM me an address for a location that someone would be during daytime hours (or somewhere a delivery wouldn't sit more than a couple of hours if it is sunny.... shady not a big deal)

I got lettuce and goat milk...but live pretty far from ya. My garden fence also blew down, although the chooks have not gotten at it yet.. need to fix that today.

Son left 2 cages open last night and I lost some pretty expensive birds. I am unbelievably bummed, mostly because a successful predator will always come back. Feeling pretty discouraged today.

Dang! That just sucks!

SilkieSensation, these are your turkeys. Any look pure bred to ya? Ignore the Wyandottes

I don't know diddly about the different turkey breeds, but those are some pretty birds!
Neighborly just sounds so much nicer than the enabler.

So now I have TWO broodies. It seems that Tiny has picked up on Olive's queues and is sitting on eggs. And the rest of our girls are more than happy to deposit them for her. She's even taken it to a whole new level and plucked her chest mostly bare.

I've read that broodieness is contagious, so our current plan is as follows:

- Tonight after dark, I will lift up Olive, remove the nesting material and her eggs to a cardboard box (which will fit into the nesting box) place her into the box on top of her eggs, and place this box back into the nesting box.
- Saturday after dark, we're going to toss a lid on that box, and move it to the brooder, and pull the lid off on Sunday morning.

Hopefully with Olive temporarily out of the picture, the rest of the girls will stop getting funny ideas.

That just leaves the question of what to do for Tiny. I'm thinking that giving her some eggs is a bad idea, since I'm not prepared to build that much bigger of a coop. But the D.O. has not completely sworn off that possibility. We also thought about giving her half of Olive's eggs, in the hopes that they hatch and that the chicks will break her mood.

Thoughts?

If the eggs are less than 10 days into the incubation then I would split the hatch between the two hens. They will both have the broody urge satisfied and you will not be over run... the reason for the '10 day' thing is that some hens don't switch moods from 'broody setting' to 'broody mama' as well when they haven't been 'in the mood' for 10 days or more.
Just move the 2nd hen to a corner of the coop where she can set quietly, mark her eggs so you can remove any newly laid ones... and watch to see if she is bothered by other birds. If she is being bothered you can create a chicken wire partition to give her more peace and quiet, just open it daily to allow her to stretch (unless the partitioned area is large enough for her to get up and move around in)

I am not sure what the food for a month contest rules really are for wingstone.................

does it HAVE to be grown in his garden right now? or just chemical free healthy food?

If I had to eat whats in my yard............it would be eggs and water............yucky water..................

everything else is just not ready...................and when it is ready........its probably a poor combo and still insufficient

My girls are loving free ranging, and I enjoy it too, but this morning and yesterday morning I found my leghorn on the neighbors side of the fence. The neighbor with the 120# Cane Corso! He's not in the yard much and doesn't seem to have much of a prey drive, but he is a dog. My fence is 4' high. Do you guys think trimming her primary flight feathers would keep her on my side of the fence? She is about 13-14 weeks old and she is the only adventurous one....so far.

Also, while walking my dog this morning, I saw an empty bag of Layena in my neighbors trash

. I thought they may have had chickens, I thought I saw a Backyard Chickens bumper sticker on their car last year (and then it was gone!). Now I have evidence! (And a bag! I "stole" it to make a tote bag!) it's not stealing if it's in the trash right?

Upcycling? Isn't that the trendy word we're using now? Lol.

I can't wait to talk to my neighbors whom I've never met before!

. Someone else has chickens around here!

Annie:

I had trouble keeping my girls in the backyard until the Roo showed up....more than once, I had to run around the neighborhood chasing chickens...I also clipped their wings....

Get water from the farm or from CC. And weren't you saying a couple weeks ago that you had a bunch of excess canned & frozen from last year's garden? Time to use some of it up. You can have quail, chicken, duck, turkey, rabbit, locally grown pork or beef. There's always eggs. Potatoes, locally grown fruits & veggies, local fish...plenty of ways to get what you're looking for. I would start by looking through freezer & cupboards to see what you already have. This may not be near as difficult as you think.
