Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hi - New chicken owner from Chester County…. Maybe someone local can help me out with a few things? First, can I move my 8 week old chicks outside to their new coop today? Without a heat lamp? Second, it appears that 5 of my 6 chicks may be roosters. How can I find new homes for the roosters ( I may keep one ), and where can I find some new friends of same age for the single hen? What is the method to introduce new chickens to the group?

On the roosters, if you could post some pictures, it might make it more difficult for those of us on here to resist getting them, especially if we've kinda been wanting the breed anyway.

Well we decided that quail won't be worth it. We are having a huge issue with flies right now. Hubby tells me to go online and look for some bird that eats flies. The search came up with Muscovy ducks. Looks like we will be getting some Muscovy ducks in the future. Been looking on craiglist and haven't seen any by me. I hope they will help with the fly problem and ticks too!

Hands down Muscovies are the best for fly control. In the past I've had Muscovies and a lot less flies.

**Wing- You had mentioned you love pasta... Have you ever had couscous? It is a tiny pasta ball, kinda reminds you of rice, you can make casseroles or salads with that. Also, the super food- Quinoa is great!! it has everything in it and it is not processed..it is what it is. It is good hot or cold...I have a few recipes I make with that if you would be interested..or anyone else for that matter.

I am a good one for taste testing. I'll even do it at no cost!

OK... I am on another egg search, though this time it is not for me, but I have been requested to find some eggs for a relative of a good friend. Apparently this lady is trying to find Americauna eggs (they are the blue egg layer, right?)

So... does anyone here have Americauna eggs or know someone who does so that I can help her make a connection to get her eggs?

We have a Lavender Americauna rooster with a blue Americauna hen. The hen lays a blue-ish egg rather than a green-ish egg. As soon as we fill our current order you could have all you want, but remember we only have the one hen that is Americauna. We have 2 others that are Easter Eggers and they lay the more green-ish eggs.

I don't know if it is that she specifically wants Americaunas or if she wants a specific egg color, or if she doesn't care as long as it is a blue or green egg and she associates Americaunas with laying that color. Many folks are confused with the whole issue, especially when it is common for feed stores and even hatcheries to use incorrect names when selling their green or blue layers.

Hey you all..................what do you think about my potato tower problem or question?


the stems and leaves of the potato plants are growing great just outside of the the cylindrical tower I made.............out of chicken wire..............so if I add straw and dirt it wont really be covering the plants.................so how am I gonna get more potatoes

I will try to post a picture later this week...............

I want this to succeed.............it sure looks like they are growing well enough!

Danielle, I was reading an article today about the egg shell calcium. The shells don't have the high amount of calcium that oyster shell has(it also tastes better!). I wouldn't worry if the babies eat it. Like Fisherlasy said, they are meat birds. It wouldn't have time to do damage anyway.

I didn't realize Hen-Bree is laying again, our hens usually leave the chicks within a few days of laying again.... but all hens follow their own little set of rules, they wouldn't want to make it easy on us!

Hi and thank you for the replies/advice… I have mainly some mixed breed cockerels, hatched by my son's friend. The dad rooster is Australorp, and the mother hens were Buff Orpington, Delaware, Barred Rock; my only pullet is a pure Australorp. I have to say the Australorp/BO cross's are kind of neat looking; it would be nice to see them grown up I can post some pics; and maybe get confirmation that they are indeed males; though that was the initial feeling when I posted pics at 6 weeks… thanks!

Dang, I wish I wasn't so far west in PA! I have a week old Blue Americauna pullet and I love what she will (hopefully) look like when she gets older and that she will lay blue eggs. I've been looking at Lavendars too. Would love to have more.
