Our family is trying to move to only eating things that we grew/raised ourselves or that someone we know grew/raised themselves. We are interested in trying to barter for things...you give me blueberries, I give you eggs etc. Problem is, we don't really know anyone around us (York county) that are interested in that type of thing. Does anyone know if there are any groups that do things like this?

I'm interested in this as well! I'm in Erie County, (not in York unfortunately), but I am interested in starting up a group out my way too, if anyone else might be.

stake and others...here is a simple explanation of growing potatoes in bags......

http://www.gardeningworld.org/2013/05/grow-potatoes-in-bags.html

I did the chicken wire container.............but the bag might have solved the growing out the sides issue............

I've never tried growing them in a bag before. I had a bag of potatoes last year in my pantry that went to sprout and moosh (they had gotten lost behind a larger something an I'd forgotten about them...

) so I decided to plant them in a bare spot of my raised garden beds. They proliferated and took off and in the fall I had a ton of little biddy taters to harvest. I pretty much put them in the ground and let them do their thing. The only problem I found with the method I tried was that it was impossible to find all the little potatoes. They tunneled so far down that I was down a good 3 feet and thought I had them all, but as of this spring, I found more once I tilled the rows. So I'd missed a good piece of the harvest. I had decided to forgo potatoes this year in lieu of other crops, but I think your contained method might be a viable way for me to get my starch and eat it too

Try on facebook. If you can't find a group, you can always make one! Good luck :) There is a group like this for Monroe county.

Thank you to whoever put up the winter snow video. Very funny!

How did I get a crappy cold in the first week of June? I'm glad i only work part time and have a flexible schedule!

My son managed to do it too! Last full day of school and we get a call from the nurse to pick him up. He was laid out with body aches and fever.

We want to do this too. My husband tried to put a club together but we don't really know anyone even semi-local. It failed miserably :(

I don't use facebook anymore (too much of a time suck for me) but maybe I will try to put together some type of site/email group. If anyone in York County or anywhere close wants to be part, let me know. We are really trying to do this, as my daughter has three brain tumors and we are committed to eating things that aren't processed etc. Not to mention all the other benefits of eating/shopping locally.

In chicken related news, here is a quick shot of my Dominique broody and her sleepy chicks.

Sorry to hear about your daughter.. Having a sick child isn't fun. That is the reason I got into chickens as well for my son.. My local flea market has a stand or 2 with fresh fruits and veggies. My TSC on Fridays has a Mennonite family that comes up and sets up a farm stand. I seen that a "larger town" has a farmers market on Saturdays on the courthouse square. Hope you can find a source of fresh veggies. Good luck in your search!

Thank you. She is doing very well now. She did 15 months of chemotherapy starting when she was six. She just turned 9 and the tumors have remained stable. She's the bravest girl I know :)
