Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I have two external pips!! I don't think I'm going to be sleeping tonight. This is my first incubator hatch.

Griggy:

I have only done one bater hatch....never give up on your eggs....I had eggs hatch on day 24....so...you don't have a couple of days of lockdown,,,,it may go longer....lol its a PIA, but a bunch of chicks running around the bater is worth the wait!

The tree frogs have been chirping and shrilling all night and day and still going strong now!!! Argh, they kept me up last night. I hope I can sleep, they are sooooo loud. Even with the windows closed.
You're very fortunate to have tree frogs (and other wildlife). Amphibians are generally the first to disappear when the environment get polluted. Every chirp is a reminder that the environment around you is healthy (or at least healthier than many places).

So tonight, when you hear them, count each as blessing that you live where you do.

That's what I told my hubby over the years! We must have a great and healthy environment for the frogs and toads to thrive in our yard! Still like to get some sleep!!! After awhile I will get used to the chirping and shrills and it won't keep me awake but right now I am very tired.

We had a neighbor that complained to call the police or something like that (can't remember) because the frogs kept him up! Like I have control over wildlife good grief.

I grew up in the country and learned at an early age to sleep through roosters, crickets, barking, etc.so maybe I shouldn't judge, but people who move out to the country to enjoy the country life ought to see these things as reminders of what they left behind, not annoyances. They really will adapt. In college, I learned to sleep through drunken students shouting in the hall outside my room and major traffic 40 ft from my bedroom window, so I think people can adapt to chirping and crowing if they give it a try.

And don't get me started on smells . . .

I love the sounds of nature. Nothing like the sound of frogs at night. I find it peaceful and comforting.

If external sounds are bothersome, sleeping with a fan running might help or some other kind of white noise. Maybe?

Ok guys. It looks like we may end up with a couple of Turkey poults here in a couple weeks (gotta love the math!). My question is can they eat what my chickens eat or do they need their own diet? Like can they eat layer feed? Heck we're still new to chickens let alone turkeys lol

I know not all agree, but I like putting straw down on mud. Also keep branches in the run for them to perch on.

I bought pine nuggets (mulch) at Agway to put in the run. I don't know if I should put them down today or wait till the sun comes out tomorrow and dries up some mud. I walked around my yard this morning and it is a swamp. I don't even know if I will be able to get my lawn tractor through my yard with the mulch. Has anyone else used the pine nuggets before? I bought the larger ones.

My banty cochin is broody!!! Will she take 2 week old banty chicks or should I get some guinea eggs for her to hatch out 4th of july?

Go with hatching eggs. She would probably need to be broody for a week or so to accept chicks and 2 week olds wouldn't listen to her even if she did take them. Rare events could happen but best odds are the eggs.

Lisa, you asked about what folks use in their runs...we use a fine gravel. stand a pressure treated board up on edge around the base of the run and then fill with 3" or so of the gravel. It will pack in on the underlying layer and the top will remain rather loose so they can scratch. Poo will wash through it with rain or an infrequent hosing and they don't have mud any more.

Here is our young roo, Flecks, posing on the gravel this morning...
