Happy Friday! Haven't slept a wink, but my eggs are hatching! I've got two babies out, one who has zipped all around but is taking his/her time and a bunch of other pips. Next time I'm not putting the incubator on the floor...my back and legs are killing me from sitting there all night! Go babies go! :)

My banty cochin is broody!!! Will she take 2 week old banty chicks or should I get some guinea eggs for her to hatch out 4th of july?

Go with hatching eggs. She would probably need to be broody for a week or so to accept chicks and 2 week olds wouldn't listen to her even if she did take them. Rare events could happen but best odds are the eggs.

Thank you miss Broody Expert!

Hope they all hatch good for you! Hatching is an awesome but addictive thing!

Guys, I have a question. I'm about out of grower feed and the babies are about 13-14 weeks old. Will it hurt them to go ahead and switch to the layer feed? I only ask because it's a 3 hour drive to get feed for them and we have over 400 lbs of layer ready and waiting. We only use organic soy free and nobody sells it around here. We don't really have the cash to order in, and I don't want to feed them any junk. Will they be ok?

Personally, I would switch them over at that age and given your circumstance. I believe the issue with feeding youngsters layer is the extra calcium causing their kidneys to have to work harder, but your crew should be within a few weeks of needing it anyway, so I don't think the short term exposure at that age will do any real harm. If you are able to do supervised free ranging around the coop you will find they won't eat nearly as much of the feed also. It can be as simple as an hour or two a day while you are in the area to watch for stray dogs and such.

I love the sounds of nature. Nothing like the sound of frogs at night. I find it peaceful and comforting.

If external sounds are bothersome, sleeping with a fan running might help or some other kind of white noise. Maybe?

I find that setting the radio to classical music on low helps a great deal. I understand about the tree frogs. They are soooo high pitched. A couple of years ago I had an interesting chorus of frogs. I had group of deep voiced frogs and some medium voice and some tree peepers. They sounded like Gregorian monks chanting.

Thanks. i am so nervous about letting them out to free range. I'm afraid they won't go back into the run :/ they still don't all go back in the coop on their own at night. They insist on roosting out in the run lol
