I have been letting the girls free range while I am outside reading or gardening................

well they are of course loving it.

I have made some decisions about which gardens I am okay with them scratching around it but there are a few important flowers I don't want them to ruin.............so I put up a low wire garden fence I had in the shed in hopes they might just turn away and go to the other more readily available stuff...........

instead they found a way to get stuck in the garden behind the fence therefore forcing them to only work with what they had...!!! oh my my

QUESTION:
have you heard your chickens make this sort of growling or chortling sound?

I was watching and listening to them .............and I think it was similar to purring..........as one was fully enjoying a deep dust bath?

then in another situation.........one was sunning herself............I wasn't sure if she was blissfully soaking up the rays.............or distressed because she didn't want to run to the nest to lay an egg and wanted to lie in the sun instead...............maybe feeling body cues saying egg is imminent?

any thoughts on these kinds of sounds?

none seemed directed at me or aggressive in any way...........so I think growling seems like the wrong word.............but honestly I don't have a word for it!
growling ..hahaha, mine was doing that to me today, i won't let her into the coop to "brood" in the nest box...hahahaha, she is Ssooooooo

mad at me, threw a fit after I filled the egg-shell cup and then re-shut the coop up...hahahahaa...oh my...chickens...hahahaha

Lisa:

My roos call the hens to them when they find food...my broody makes sounds similar to let the chick know goodies are available...think this is the sound....

Tried to let my girls out today. Could only catch 3 of them at first and then finally got #4. 5 & 6 (the speckled sussex) stayed out of reach. So Mabel, Niko, Colleen, and Vicki had fun playing under the apple tree for the late afternoon. Then, fun time catching them to put them back. Chased Mabel around the pen about 30 laps. Silly girls. Pics when my husband finishes his father's day phone call.

Nice :) how old are they now? Ours are just now 13 weeks. I'm trying to let them out for at least an hour in the evenings is just hard to get them back in lol. I think tomorrow I'll be waiting until around 7 - ish to let them out and hope they go back in on their own lol. Coops looking Good :)

Mine are 12 weeks old. Got them March 22.

LMP, are you going to Green Dragon just for the day? Or are you going to be down there for the weekend? I may be getting yet another job up your way, also. Is everyone in NB, Westport, Crossfork, Renovo refinancing? This is bizarre.

Nice looking girls! the coop is gonna be really nice...What color are you painting it?...or are you doing siding?..metal or shingle roof?

...sorry, i couldn't help myself...
LadyBehir- i am gonna be in Lock Haven tomorrow w/ daughter & grand baby...have you seen the progress on the tear-down of the building that will soon be our new TSC??? I am so excited to have even more options now!!
clap.gif
..I like supporting Calico Creek, but some things they are really high priced on...having the TSC will help out a lot!

We had some sunbathers this evening when we let them out for a while lol.
they are funny to watch..first time I saw chicks do that i thought something was wrong with them..they just sort-of "melted" into the grass.

I love when they are sunbathing.............they really seem to enjoy this

the funny part is watching them get comfortable.............my one big girl seems like a Weeble.............she needs to roll bit and seems off balance ............and goes back and forth until getting just right

as she rolls she seems scared........like she has lost her balance.........it is funny and hard to explain.......

So 34 of the 39 eggs have hatched so far. The babies are so cute and I'm having fun trying to figure out what they are. I have one with feathered legs and four toes...any guesses?

Wingstone..I am interested in Muscovy eggs. And more hatching eggs from you and CC :)

Our neighbors cow has gone through the electric fence twice and visited our garden. Left us a free pile of manure and ate all our cabbage plants, some of our bean seedlings and our cantaloupe plants. At least we got the free manure.
