Is this angel wing? He's been molting and this morning he looks like this. He eats layer crumbles and eats bugs here because he free ranges. How can I limit his protein intake? I can't really... :/

Sorry everyone but I need to vent

had nothing to do with the chickens this time either. So I noticed today that there was some blood on the carpet and was very confused about how it got there. Welll after watching the dogs and looking over them, I found that my husky is bleeding from her gums or tooth way in the back. She's almost 10 and her teeth are rather nasty. I'm feeling really crappy now about not brushing her teeth (though the times I tried she never cooperated). I had to fight with her to even get a good look in her mouth. It came down to my kids holding her down and holding the flashlight while I pried own her mouth and I still didn't get a good look. We really don't have the money for this

even if it's just that one tooth which would be a miracle. She wasn't even acting any different than usual either. Argh

I feel horrible for her. I tried to clean it with salt water and she cried. I know it hurts

There's not even a chance of getting her to the vet until next pay day. .. next Friday. *sigh* I just needed to vent.

Call the vet, and tell them what is up. Ask if you can post date a check or just pay later, The worst thing they can do is say no. No harm done.

Its SOP at my vet that whenever a critter is under anesthesia for any reason, the teeth get cleaned....your girl is a bit older and might really need this to be taken care of....most vets will make arrangements with you....you might even try some ambersol on her gums to get her to let you inspect...(she will hate the taste though)

Something I noticed with my baby roo (around 5wks)...well, he's very wary of all of the big girls, and his mom keeps him a bit away from the rest, but, both of the Roos treat him very well....he can eat scratch at the feet of both roos even when one roo shoo's his mama away...and now that he's roosting, his spot is right next to the main roo....(a very sought after spot!)....is this normal?

It is very normal with my chickens. Often the hen will still be on the coop floor with some of the chicks while others that have feathered in a bit quicker will be on the roost with dadddy and like you said they will be right beside him. If I were you and wanted to produce more chicks,

I would breed from the roosters that show that trait the most, provided you have a choice.

Hey Everyone ll!

DS and I got home from camp Wednesday to 2 surprises
1. the baby chicks that I thought weren't hatching till 7.7 (based on what I wrote down on the calendar) actually started hatching out on 6.30

. So far we have 6 of 8 that survived. I am going to have to do some research b/c my hatches this year have been TERRIBLE

. This last run was a dry incubation and that didn't change things much at all. Might be time to once again play barber on the feathers in the vent area. Then if that doesn't work -- it might be time for new Roosters.
2. My birds that haven't been laying for the last couple of months (all 20 White Plymouth Rocks and Partridge Plymouth Rocks) have finally started laying again! My production is now back up to where I can once again supply the local CSA with eggs.

When doing evening chicken chores last night, I decided it was time to cull the 3 WR roos that I am definitely not keeping. I climbed in the Juvenile's tractor to pull them out and discovered that apparently I slid their tractor right over what I thought was a ground nest of bees.

Luckily I only got stung once. DH graciously went out and slid them another 5 feet then dumped boiling water on the spot even though he couldn't find a nest. TODAY, as I'm moving more juveniles out to that same slide I see the bees buzzing again - so once again I start looking ..... and there hanging in my tractor is a paper wasp nest the size of a GRAPEFRUIT!

So tonight I"m gonna be soaking that thing with wasp and hornet spray, then sliding the coop so the birdies don't eat any wasps that fall out of it. Tomorrow I'll either spray it again or knock it down and burn it depending on how much action is taking place.

To top off last night, DS and I went and picked up our new Bantam Wyandotte Roo from Art Lundgren. Art raises champion stock bantam wyandottes and call ducks - and he only lives like 5 minutes from my house! Super Super nice guy and b/c the Roo is for DS's 4H poultry project, he gave me a great price on a 2 year old roo who has already won several shows and fathered over 100 chicks this year. Hoping this turns around my hatching rate on bantam wyandottes! The new Roo is named Skipper in honor of my DS's current favorite Show "Gilligan's Island". The older Roo "Mr. Magoo" is in a rabbit hutch with a single hen so I can figure out once and for all if he's doing his job or not.

I'm moving my Big White Rock into a smaller coop with his 2 blue partridge rock daughters, my blue Andalusian, and 1 or 2 partridge rocks today, again I need to see if He's doing his job or not. I'd like some more of what i'm calling "blue partridge rocks" and I also want to see what comes of breeding the 2 girls I have back to their father.

DD comes home from horse camp today, its fairly cool here today with a nice breeze. Enjoy Your Chickens Everyone!

Chicken question for the day. About how long after red and full size wattles can I expect eggs? My two girls are also squatting when approached. It has been this way for maybe a week or so.

Also, here is the bracelet my chickens unearthed, solid, but not very pretty.
