hey everyone, hope its ok to post this here, my daughter and family are in Pittsburgh, she called to say her 13 year old has run away, he is in Murphysborro, i am in oklahoma so can't do much but get the word out and ask for prayer..

Thank you. Catching the culprit is key, as it will surely come back. For now, I am locking the coop at night. Normally they are safe in the run, not anymore.

Sorry to hear....that awful....Hope is wasn't your Eng orp....use your .22...and I am assuming if it was a free range attack Bella would've kicked a bit of canine tucas...might try to figure out how the critter got in and got out of the pen(s).....my two cents....

Lost 2 Orpingtons, a blue and a Partridge. Kids are away at camp, I get to break the news to them tonight when they get home....I miss them so much it hurts. Looking forward to seeing them, but not forward to breaking the news. They will know the second the see the main run, I simply could NOT get all the feathers up.

Blarney, I am so sorry you had to go through this! Like was said before, wish I was closer to offer some help. I'm really hoping you get whatever was the culprit!

I do have winter hardy breeds. Our new coop will be 6'x8' and we only have 4 chickens. I told my husband that I need more so that they can all keep warm together during the winter, I told him it's better for the chickens Haha. He must believe me because he agreed to it, it took me 3 years to talk him into getting chickens.

The poor deprived things don't get to free range. The neighbors are too close with their unhealthy chickens.

Fresh transplant to Chester County from California here.  I built a coop in California and had 7 hens and plenty of eggs for my use, and friends too..  I'm hoping to do something similar at my new place here in Lower Oxford Township in the spring.

Anybody familiar with the ordinances in this area?

My ordinances in my area (I'll never tell!) say that we are not allowed to have chickens. I agree with Stake, ask your neighbors. I talked to all of my neighbors who share a fence and property line and they were all okay with it once they were assured there would be no roosters and not much noise. I actually just discovered a few weeks ago someone down the street already has chickens, maybe 6 houses down!

Well, I FINALLY get to meet my long lost sistah! lol    Methinks I'm going to love having chickens as well. We live in VERY close proximity to a dentist's office. In fact, when they park, they are staring in my back yard! It is HIGH TIME we build that fence I've been talking about. Sure...we have one now, but, it's a chain link...no privacy. Come income tax, we're building!! My own little chicken/garden sanctuary, right here in town Thora (our Pitty) will just love it! Maybe you can come visit my sanctuary someday!! 

Sounds like it high time for a high fence! Just a tip, my fence is 3 or 4 feet high and my girls can clear it easily. One day I found a chicken on the hood of my car! Not quite the hood ornament I had in mind... And do use caution and introduce you chicks/chickens to your pitbull carefully. Aurora had a sad encounter and this is her second batch of chickens. We worked with our dog and people are always amazed that my chickens free range and the dog runs around freely as well. I'd love to visit when you get yourself situated, and you are welcome to visit here if you as well!

I will have eggs when my hen is done raising her keets in about 7 weeks or so. They'll be mottleds. I have one pullet now, she's 8 weeks. I offered her to ErinsFlock first though. Eggs would be better for you because I'm on the other side of the state and only have one pullet who wouldnt be breeding stock because her comb is crazy.

I would never just throw my dog out there with chickens lol!!! I've been introducing them as chicks to her, so that she can get used to their smell, their sound etc. I've got one of the most well mannered, obedient dogs I know. When I say "stop" she stops. I have no worry as far as the chickens are concerned. As for the fence? Yeah...I kinda figured lol Our chain link is 4 ft, but, it kinda sits on a tiny embankment so it's down to about 3 ft. I didn't plan on letting my chickens free range (building a portable run) until the fence is built. Even then, wings are getting done. Thanks for the tips, but, I promise I do have a FEW marbles left!!

Depending on the breed, they will clear a 4 ft fence even with wings clipped.

As a lizard owner, I do not use the lizard stones for heat. They have been known to cause burns to lizards. I don't think they would be good around hens either. Maybe someone can invent a heated mat type of thing to keep the eggs from freezing in the winter but safe enough not to burn down a coop.

What about an outdoor heated mat for a dog kennel? That's what I'm thinking about doing. I think they are pretty carefully regulated not to burn the animals
