My black Australorps are 15 weeks old and not close to laying yet. They are still pink in the combs and the wattles haven't grown. The waiting game is so hard. My new Easter Eggers and Ameraucana are around 20 weeks and only one is getting a red comb. It's so hard to wait for new eggs.

How old do you think she is? And what age do you know FOR SURE the gender?

FF:

Yep, I'm a sucker for the CCLs......tonight is/was pretty confused....my OE was perched on the pen fence, I put her in the big coop....the Dork mix flew back into the growout pen and was perched in the coop.....my silkie was under the main coop and I put her in the big coop.....the LAVs and one Rode went into the coop....the silkies were in a scrum in the corner of the pen....and the other five girls were perched on a bungie cord that holds the tarp tight....(I tried to convince the other rode to go into one of the two coops...but wouldn't )....I'll be out with Denny ever few hours watch over things....

One crazy night in the coop! Little buggers just don't know what to do yet. (no trouble finding that food dish, huh) I'll bet they will figure it all out in a few days. Sorry youre not getting much sleep babysitting all night...

Sitting outside watching the birds and drinking coffee (getting a craving for Stake's cider). The turkeys went crazy, and I looked for a problem. Then the dog began barking. Two women were walking on the back road. A few minutes later they came back. The turkeys went crazy again. They are also gobbling a lot more now, but only when I am using a power tool, or they hear a motorcycle. Maybe they think the tools are a bike, and think it is me?
They used to gobble for me in the morning to get me to come to them. With their new pen right in front of me, they don't gobble much when they see me anymore.

Here's a good one for you....after FF dropped off her girls with me, one of my orps(one who hasn't laid and egg in six months) decided to start crowing .....

It's always great when your day of meals comes from your yard, okay, a few bought items, but I am getting better at it.

Breakfast- eggs with toast( OK, the bread is store bought)
Lunch- a bowl of egg drop soup, half a chicken breast and boiled beets.
Dinner at work will be the same as lunch.

I am following a blog, where the family is not going to any big box grocery stores for a year and only bartering with neighbors for things they need...I could never do it but it is interesting to follow.

Harford Fair is another option if you missed Wayne County. Fond memories! I haven't been in a few years, but there is a website, and under "exhibitors" tab there are some poultry and apiary events. Starts August 18th and runs for five days I think.
