Eeeeee! My first egg.

My Mac laid it. She was acting kinda funny today. Found her in the nesting box then going from box to box - really restless. Left her alone for a while and found this. She was so proud of herself as I am of her.

Doing my fist incubation. 5 eggs, 2 speckled Sussex and 3 speckled Sussex/red sex link mixes. This is a beginning to a new obsession..LOL Hubby thought I only had 2 eggs in there then asked how we ended up with 5!

Oooh, SS are so neat looking! Good luck with the incubation! DH wanted to know how we were only supposed to have 20 CX chicks and wound up with 26.....

When he said he would give it a try if he had the info, he meant by the acre, my research shows a heavy seed rate, would need 50 pound bags...
Thinking he also meant enough to make it worthwhile for the combine to come in and take it off...

I would also need to know how to store this by the ton

Could pea's be put in for a overwinter crop, planted in the fall after tobacco comes off, ...these are the things he asked me, and I can not answer.

I've never grown field peas, but regular peas won't survive the winter like wheat. Black-eyed peas are very popular field peas in the south, and they may double crop them with other things down there, I don't know. I remember eating them when I lived in GA and wasn't that impressed, but then many southern dishes didn't appeal to me. I did like the fried chicken and peach cobbler.

We are up to 6 eggs now. no more eggs. Lets see if he notices this one ;) I keep telling him it's our first hatch so maybe a 50% hatch rate. Although I am hoping for better hatch rate- he doesn't need to know that!

Problem is, deer love them. Guessing they could be spring planted. Have no idea how to harvest, combine, I assume.

Grrrr. The last week or so I've been getting less and less eggs. I've noticed wet yolk in the nest boxes. At first I thought maybe a shell less egg but now it's happening everyday. What do I do to stop an egg eater? I have no idea who is doing it! They have plenty of food and nest boxes (they just all like to use the same one!).

I hear that ceramic eggs can do the trick.

Wing, they do look like Anconas a bit, but they're not. Best I can remember was 'probably mixes, maybe some purebred in there'. Unfortunately...I forget what breeds they mentioned. I blame the memory loss on my age. They are cute as all get out. Now I know why you people keep these pooping machines.

Hi! We are in north east PA, can we join? This is our first time raising chickens & we are loving it! We started with 3 brown leghorns & 3 white silkies. Then a few weeks later got 6 EE. Now we also have a blue Marans , a bantam mix, 4 lavender orps, & 1 buff Orp. (Chicken math, no one warned us, lol!) We also have 3 khaki cambells. We love the idea of the PA thread, as none of our friends or relatives "get us" keeping & loving chickens. They all kind of Shake their heads & figure we'regoing through a mid life crisis. Lol
