Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I am going to dump my potato tower tomorrow to see what yield I have..........I have already reached in and pulled out 3 nice looking potatoes.

My QUESTION FOR THIS GROUP=    Can I use one of these potatoes to start growing some more between now and the fall?

I usually keep the smaller ones in the soil over winter. I d

I figure maybe I might get smaller potatoes...........but there still might be growing time.

they are Yukon gold and they say 85-90 days are needed............

what do you all think?

worst case scenario is I sacrificed one potato to an experiment?

I usually leave the small ones in the soil to overwinter. I do the same with my onions and garlic. the potatoes may grow between now and fall.

Tasted good.

Hi all, :frow  I'm from Lawrence County and new to raising chickens. I've been hanging around BYC for about a month or so and thought I would introduce my self here. I have 8 little 4 week old birds. 3 Barred Plymouth Rocks, 3 Rhode Island Reds, and 2 Buff Orpingtons (I had three but one didn't make it beyond about 10 days)

All of them are slowly earning names and I am  :fl hoping all are pullets but one of the BRs has me suspicious.

Currently I am in the process of building a coop and run that should be done in a few weeks. It will be set up to hold 12 layers or so (chicken math comes on strong and from what I understand there is no known cure)

Finally I also raise CX for meat. My first batch earlier in the summer are in the freezer and delicious and the next batch of 25 are two weeks old tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to getting yins all. Coincidentally I tried to read the last two weeks of posts in this thread, and WOW does it move FAST! Looks like a great bunch of folks with a passion for poultry and country livin.

I am also a husband and father of 3 crazy kids. A girl and two boys.

Welcome! I'm in northwestern Westmoreland County. If you ever need bantam cochin chicks or eggs, let me know! That's about all I can offer until spring. Then I'll have call ducks. Other than that I have just barnyard mixes. I will have some mottled frizzle serama x bantam cochin mix in spring. I think they'll be pretty cute.

Do you leave them in even if its in a tower?

I built a tower of chicken wire maybe.............2ft wide..............so I am wondering if frost might be an issue?

thanks for your response though!

My potatoes are in potato bags I got from gardeners supply co. Actually, your tower may be better because the bags I have my potatoes in are only about 2 feet high, if that. My onions and grlic are grown in containers on my deck and frost was never a problem for them either. It can't hurt to try a few. You may even get them to grow before winter and get a second crop. If you see some shoots and have enough plastic, maybe you could also try to lengthen the growing season by covering them.

Went to close the birds up tonight a little after dark and the 5 keets my broody has were no where. I was so scared, looking in all of the bushes. I started making kissy sounds like there were treats so maybe they'd come to me. They started peeping and one started making noises I've never heard before. It seriously sounded like it was getting attacked. I couldn't figure out for the life of me where the noise was coming from. Then the noise was coming from above me? I looked up, and

They're 3 weeks old and the roof on the new coop is 11 feet high. I was so relieved they were up there.
