Great pictures! Lovely family and Joel is one good looking Roo. I was reading with my grandson on my lap, he looked at the picture of you and said 'Grandma, is that you?' I was quite flattered and said, 'you think that looks like me??' He answered, 'well, before you got old.' . :old

lol thank you :) The kids are always catching chickens. They love them to death lol. I have to agree Joel is one handsome boy and a very good roo. He takes excellent care of his ladies. He was NOT happy about me holding him and taking his picture though. He may be a nice boy but he likes to keep his distance. Being held or touched is not his thing lol

Been missing in action lately, I missed many pages and not going back to read them..

Hope all is well with everyone, been hectic around here and just to tired most nights to fight with the tablet to read all this..

I really need an evening off, and just sit by a fire..

Please nobody throw rocks at me but, I can not wait till the slower days of winter get here. ( the non snowy days ) ..

This weekends projects are
Making and canning the ketchup
Pulling the remaining beets and making pickled beets
Starting a big pot of beef bone broth.

This all has to be on Sunday since tobacco cutting season has officially started for us.

Hello all,

I am from Lilly PA, in between Johnstown and Altoona. Just started building my quail pen. These birds will be used for dog training purposes and most will end up being set free or come back to the pen after my lab flushes them.

You must have a powerful toilet to be able to flush a quail! And you are training your lab to flush the toilet? Wow!!! How will they get out of the sewer?

Long post:

Just saved on my red sex links life...Our two dalmatians love the chickens and when in the field never pay any mind to them. Our lab mix on the other hand we only had him for a year and is curious and will be relaxing one minute then go after a chicken the other. Our Dalmatians were raised since 6 months with chickens so they never hurt them. Well I let the dogs outside in their fenced in area (chickens are free ranged) then go to get ome treats to feed the chickens. Come outside all three are hovered over a red sex link who is on her back, and I assume at this moment she is dead. I hurry and gather the dogs up put them in their crates inside the house. Meanwhile our rooster is going crazy. I went over to her, she was laying on her back, and her head/neck was wet, I assume from our lab. I thought she was dead until I saw her chest moving up and down from her breathing. So carefully I turn her over and put her on her feet. After about 5 minutes she is walking around and even eating some treats and concerned on how to get over to her flock. I guess being on her back caused her to go unconscious? I've heard of hanging them upside down by their feet does, but not just laying them on their back. Anyway we let her with rest of her flock, giving everyone treats so they would leave her alone and not make a big deal about her almost dieing. She goes to her favorite hiding spot and is just relaxing. I am sure she is scared after the ordeal. I checked her over and as far as I can tell no broken bones. She isn't bleeding. It looks like they just pulled feathers from her butt so I put some blu knot on her. When i went outside one of my Dalmatians had a mouth full of her feathers. But my questions is how long will it take her to go with rest of the flock? I have to figure a way to keep them from flying over the dog fence, Clipping wings isn't an option because they fly to get away from other predators.

Anyone need help with their farm? I'm a 21 year old male looking to experience the farm life for real. I don't really know much about building but I can learn. I'd like to help someone with their animals, maybe someone older or busy with their career? In return I would just want to keep a few birds of my own on you're property since I can't where I'm from. If anyone is interested in a farm hand, I am very open minded and looking to get out of city. I don't smoke, drink, or do drugs and have no criminal record. It's been my dream since I was a kid to be on a farm.

Also check on Craigslist for your area under farm & garden, I've seen postings on there for farm help. What about your local farm stores like tractor supply or Rural King maybe there are postings there or you could put up your own posting. Best of luck to you!

I have used this one for the last 3 years, we like it...

Hubby opens jars and dumps them in a squeeze bottle, for some reason he thinks it must come out of a squeeze bottle
