Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I'm not picky on coloring at all actually. Not crazy about those strange turkens, but other than that I haven't met a chicken I don't like. My name is Anne Marie and I have a problem......

Problem? I don't see a problem.

Intervention - when you notice someone is not totally overrun with something to the extent you are, so we all help increase the numbers. Particularly effective with animals.

At least that's how it works here!

Have you got those bee's yet, need to barter for honey instead of buying it.
What about that goat milk, I want half gallon a week.

Is this a kind of intervention?

Barberry jam! The first time to make any jam/jelly...My dad gave me a book on edible plants of PA...we have these bushes, very indigenous to PA(this area)...after many years-finally did it!!
Is anyone else familiar with this bush?...is it okay for chickens to have a go at the berries too?..I know people have to be "careful" as to how much they are consuming, it can/could cause some digestive issues...everyone is different though as to how they handle foods/herbs and such.
Love the molting pic... we had a couple of hens who were just pathetic this year. For the past month every time I rake out the coop it looks like there was a huge pillow fight in there!

Here's a suggestion for hubby wanting to raise hogs.( I have ended up processing for others who raised them and then couldn't do the processing, for various reasons).
Have him buy a small hog about 150 pounds or so, that size would be easy to handle....you would only be out the money for the hog if he decides it is not worth the hassle......hog processing is a long cold day....hate to see people end up with a pen full of something then decide they made a mistake after putting all the time and feed in
We have been splitting a half hog with a friend whose son raises them for FFA farm show/county fair thing each year, so use of the meat is absolutely not an issue. I have no problem butchering an animal. Even my favorites are dealt with as a practicality when the time comes.... it is just a fact of life and I am (sometimes unfortunately) very much a practical realist.... some may call me hard hearted, but if it needs done then that is all there is to it. DH is more of a softie than I am but is still good with 'doing what needs done'. He wants to go to NJ for a weekend class on hog butchering that a small farm puts on. I am good with that, but scheduling has caused conflict on the last 2 opportunities. I would love to have the chance to butcher or help butcher a couple of pigs before we invest in our own.... which would have to wait till more space is available anyway. I know he and I have discussed it at length and both agree that we need to learn from someone before doing it ourselves.

Fisherlady, that sounds like a good plan, and I have seen the ads for the class that you mention......I have always had my uncle around and in charge of things,,,, the net time we do hogs will be the first time on our own,,, I hope we can remember everything...unfortunately we can not ask him for advice...

If you use Facebook, there's a group called backyard butchers, they can be a little harsh and straight to the point for some, but I learn just by seeing the pictures that they post.

Didn't manage to capture a swarm this year. Hoping next year. There are so few honeybees it's scary.

Goats will probably be a spring project. More available then. Seems a lot of people want goat milk.

took seven young cockerels to the auction today, as ya'll know, if i raise them (except meaties) i just can't eat them, just gets stuck in my throat, anyway, this man came up while we were in the check in line and said, those chickens look mean, these are brahma's, so i guess they do have the hawk or eagle look, when i told him they were gentle , he said maybe to you but they would probably hurt anyone else, he just doesn't know brahma's, so tried to set him straight, don't think he believed me. i went to look to see what veggies were that and coming back heard my husband telling another man that i couldn't process them myself unless i didn't "make" pets out of them, thats why we always named out steers, hamburger, t-bone and so on
gig.gif
, anyway, someone bought them for 6.00 each, guess not bad.

$6 each is a good price! As far as the fellow who thought they looked mean.... some people you just can't fix!

Perhaps we need to revisit this video....

the view from inside the coop this morning as the sun was coming up. It was more pink than the picture shows though. They have a really nice view. Especially now that a lot of leaves have fallen.
