Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

do you have any kind of net? i have a long handle fish net( for outside pond) that i use for the chickens, it also pulls eggs toward me when out of reach.
I dont think the net would work. I'll try to explain this to my best ability. But it's a rabbit hutch where they laid their eggs. It's deeper then I can get into without crawling the entire way in and it's about 5 ft tall. But it has a built in nesting box which is fastically just four pieced os wood making a square with a little roof on top of that. That is where they lay their eggs. it's not very big. But I dont think I would fit a net inside there, and if I could not sure if it would be able to get the eggs over the wood ledge. here is apicture of the hutch with the chickens in it last year...5/7 laid their first eggs in here. this is the nesting boxes. first time they both laid their eggs. these two are always together. waiting her turn to lay her egg
These pics are awesome!!! @LMP..I agree with Stake, the stink eye is definitely a BCMs norm.

I was looking through some old photos, posted these pics of my best girl and broody extroidinaire, 'Popcorn'. Love this girl to pieces.

So the turkeys got out of their pen tonight, one is roosting on the house, the other 3 were on the porch railing, I wrested one down and had him most of the way to the coop before remembering I'm not supposed to be lifting anything. I sure hope I didn't set myself back.

I do not think our Wyandotte coop got closed up tonight, I'm going to venture out there and have a look see.

Blarney, do we all need to come over there and make you d nothing but sit outside and look at those views,,, really,,, take it easy, I learned the hard way,

LMP, I will take any advice on the herbs, seems to be an old time thing, after medications came along, no one bothered with natural things.

MC, I cold pack all meat, and thaw that rooster out, most times freezer burn is only on the skin, or even can be cut out, If all else fails it makes or good dog food....
Just a thought if you has time and have a good sale nearby on chicken pieces, .. I pack chicken legs in canning jars, makes for a quick meal that you could take on the road.. it would be precooked with no reason to heat it... now how many truck drivers can drive down the interstate gnawing on a chicken leg.

i see, would be hard to get over the ledge, hope you're little if you have to crawl back there

, i think i would have to have my husband cut a hole back there just big enough for the hand since i'm not little

No I am not little lol. The most I've crawled into it was to my waist. Then it almost tipped over.our gran isnt even lol But this weekend they won't be using it anymore. We are cutting the legs off. cutting them uneven though so it lays flat since our land is slanted. then using the 10x10 dog kennel and putting hte ducks in there. Can't have the chickens gettign frost bit again bc the ducks are too messy with water.

Popcorn is a cutie! Looks like she was a good momma too. That really funny about your turkeys, but you probably weren't laughing last night...:duc
Do you still have feed bags?

Funny mental picture. Eating chicken legs out of a jar driving down the interstate....

Well, today is going to be new Silkie washing day. Wish me luck! These girls don't seem to have been handled much, so I am expecting a lot of splashing. It's times like this I wish I had a laundry tub. But I'm thankful I have new free little chickens to tend to. :D

The big excitement about this canner is the ability to have food in the truck that I cooked. Before, I would freeze everything, and DH would be able to eat my cooking for a week. Now... It is funny that I finally have the canner, and I am going with him. I do cook in the truck. I even have a little grill that we used to cook on quite often, We will have to find a new one.
I have spent the last hour thinking about the bone-in chicken, and I have to ask. Is there any reason I can't season the meat any way I want before canning? I mean, can I go so far as to use Shake n Bake? I was originally thinking I wanted to put parmesan on the chicken. Now I am making myself very hungry thinking of all I want to do to the chicken (ahem! Not how I meant that to come out)!

Since chemical free is my selling point I do everything possible to avoid any chemical treatment.
I am in the process of installing small feeders in each area for oregano and cinnamon mixture.
Tell me all you know about feeding herbs to livestock ( all livestock )...

I did once have a relative who insisted on finishing hogs with brandy, and I must say his pork was very good. So maybe these odd ways do help.

i have been mixing a handful of mixed herbs to my chickens in their layer feed. i have to run so i cannot say too much now. basil, mint, oregano, marigolds are all good to use. tonite i will tell you a bit about what they do. for now gotta go
