Hello from Chester County!
ll
Hello from Huntington Co. I'm new to chickens. Should I be doing any thing special to get them ready for winter?
thanks for the great links!!!Welcome! I'm also in Chester county, Southeast, near Kennett Square.
Welcome aboard! Lots of advice on this site for winterizing. I've found that the keys are to keep their water available -stay on top of the ice, and paramount is to keep their coop or sleeping space dry. They can handle cold, it's the wet and cold that gets them. I like this article because it addresses the food issue:

if only I could knit! I saw knitted hats on chickens on Pinterest.Welcome from Bucks County!
Hello! Yes, you need to knit them 3 sweaters each of fine wool and wrestle them every day to get it on. Haha! Sorry, just kidding!I'm new to this too, but they just seem to need a draft free coop with proper ventilation and as always, fresh, clean, non frozen water to drink at all times.

awesome!...looks like the kids are enjoying them!!
it is a big change out there eh?!...the chickens are handling it better, like you said..they are going from one sunny-warm spot in the run to the other...they look content enough.Bbbrrrrrrrrrrr, what a change to the weather..
Spent most of the day outside and my bones are feeling it.
Birds do not seem to mind the weather yet, it is funny to watch them trying to run into the wind..
Quail pen was emptied today, decided not to overwinter them and just start fresh in the spring, unless a good deal would come along.
2 extra drakes got done today also.
Downsizing everything for winter except me..
keep working with them...i heard Silkies are a little bit slower...hey..don't kill the messenger okay?!..it was read from another thread...some of mine are like.."duhCongrats! And your daughter looks so excited. Will these be for meat or company?![]()
It is nippy out... Did you process all the quail? Your little cochin girl is quite comfortable now, especially since the new girls came. The newer black Silkie mix (Malificent) tries to roost on the porch every night, which means she sits on the handlebars of our bikes .And little Oddball sits right next to her. So every night I keep putting them in the coop. I am trying to do it when it is still a little light out, so hopefully they are getting the idea....![]()

The silkies are trying to stay on the porch every night. I don't think they know the coop exists. Still working on a plan for that one....
hahaha..never been to one of those..wondered what it looks like in there..not the bucket of chicken, silly...the restaurant....so glad to hear from you!!

I assume you are referring to Miss Evie... she is quite a ham! My oldest was a peacock for Halloween and Evie decided she wanted to try on her big sister's tail and headband. Just look at her hamming it up! *the full costume included a sparkly blue, hooded tunic![]()
And here are some chicken pictures, just to keep on topic (although, the costume is a pea-fowl, so that counts, right?) lol
ACTION SHOT! LOL

it is blowing here like a mad hatter!!! ...wonder if there will be any leaves left in the yard to even rake for the birds...Good luck with the tarps!! Did that last yearQuote:
Howdy from East Whiteland Chester Co...not too late to fill the coop for winter...
Pretty chilly and windy here today....I have a tarp covering the smaller coop that will not stay attached,,,,tried to reset it twice and it still comes loose...will be re-engineering when the wind dies down. Also need to weather strip the small coop....
x'2 Blarney!!thanks for the great links!!!
