Sometimes I'm amazed at how little out takes to make a good meat. I had some chicken wings left from the weekend and the the in a pot and cooked them off. Took the little meat that was there and shredded it into the stock, added some old corn that was in the freezer, some onion and celery, made rivels from some flour and a couple eggs, threw in a chopped had boiled egg, seasonings, and before I knew it, three quarts of soup from a couple chicken wings!

I didn't have any onions left from this year, so the onions, celery and flour were from the store, I must have spent a dollar on the whole pot!

Being older birds probably made a lot of difference, you should of said you needed onions, we have a large stash, hubby does not like store bought onion.

Good after noon all:

Been off for a couple of days and have noticed alot of hawk activity (all red tailed)...for the past three days they've flown in (meaning at or below tree top level) two have perched in neighbor's trees about 50yds from the hiding flock). I have chased them off on all occasions, but, as the leaves are falling they are being real aggressive....hopefully the coming cold snap will get them to leave....just a heads up...

got outside for a few minutes today...actually got something accomplished!! Cut herbs and hung them in coop and put in nest boxes, sure does make things smell really good! Have been trying to figure a way to get the egg shell & grit cups hung, most of the coop is brick wall, the wood areas are higher up except below the windows..my brain de-fogged long enough to come up with this for now....gosh, everything is going in slow-motion.. now back to sitting on the couch, seems all i have the energy for anymore...:/ this should work for now..unless they decide to dance on them..which they have been known to do:rolleyes: ... The birds have been so layed-back and calm ..all were busy getting their feathers "did"..haha..and look at those little ones that aren't so little anymore..geesh... should have eggs in a month or so..should, but of course they have the say in that:/ .. everyone is a bit raggedy right now..feathers are every where.. all that 'stuff' in the run is the last of the garden.. pepper plants..sweet & jalapeno..they had a good time with that!
Those BLRW are gorgeous! Definitely on my list for the future.....
I have stupid chickens. They still sleep in a cuddle puddle under the coop. Seriously, if they like it there, is there any reason to make them go inside? Maybe for winter?
I still have two chickens who are still roosting on the porch on either the bikes or other perch every night. I put them in the coop if it's going to be colder than low 30's. My new silkies are still sleeping on the porch huddled in a ball too.. I am working on their separate coop from the free rabbit hutch. Should have it done in a day or so before it gets too cold.
Roos better today!!! Don't know what happened yesterday, but it sure scared me!! My chicken are my babies. I never thought they would bring do much enjoyment!!!!!!
Agree, I love to just sit outside and watch or interact with my chickens! Even my naighbor's love to watch them.
Anne and any others that would like chicken in December, I need a count of how many out would like. Over half are sold all ready...I need a bigger space for meat birds. I also have a few small turkey left, expecting them to be in the 9 to 10 pound range at 2.50 a pound.
I will be taking at least four please, I will be asking my for ends in the next few days. It will probably be more like 10 chickens for this order if I may. :D

Tell me about it. I had a hawk try to pick up one of my Silkies yesterday. I think she's okay, just lost some feathers. And the dog was outside too! :eek:I think she may have scared off the hawk after that, because I know she would definitely go after the hawk. And the dog did get excited when the hawk was swooping down. I just caught the tail end of the action ( no punintended).

The free rabbit hutch before... Will post pics when it is done. It's in pretty rough shape, but it can be saved! :D

Oh I know! For the first time since we've started free ranging, yesterday a hawk flew into our yard and perched in one of the trees. It looked like a smaller one but I'm not sure exactly what kind. All the babies and most of the flock were out there. I was in my son's room and heard Joel and the rest of the flock go crazy and I liked our the window and saw it. It flew away with empty talons though. All the babies and half the flock piled under our front steps. The rest just watched it. I think they knew they were too big for it to grab them. Usually our yard is well covered with all the leaves but with all of them gone, the Hawks can see now. Frustrating!

I was talking to my neighbor who also has chickens and he said that he lost 4 chickens last week by a fox, coyote, and a hawk. He lets his free range and does not have anything over his run. Then he told me that there was a hawk sitting on the corner of my run. My run is covered in 2 x 4 welded wire on the top and has hardware wire 3' up the sides and 2 x 4 welded wire 4' above that. I think he was trying to figure out how to get in. I'm hoping mine are safe!

oh..hey..for got to add about the birds...there are some very nice breeders out there..as you have most likely already read..PeakyBeaky is the closest to me....she has wonderful birds! Her partridge are fantastic!..just a heads-up
thumbsup.gif
...she has great stock from some of the best BLRW breeders in america..so..good lines there, she is doing an awesome job with them.

My "Hen-Bree"..which means chicken soup/stock ,..hahaha, well, she was going to BE soup if I hadn't taken her... now look at her..she has a great shape to her and her comb is real nice..her lacing has much to be desired, but I tell ya..if i got her with a nice rooster who's lacing was decent...they could actually put out some good chicks!..you never know with birds..especially ones that take such a LONGGGG time to mature and Wyandottes are at the top of that list!!

If you need to, you can put a 'hawk protector' out....it is a 4x8 piece of plywood with four legs cut from a 2x4.....the chooks will run under and most hawks will not try to land and go under...the best plan is to plant bushes around your property for your crew to run under if a hawk flys over...my crew is pretty savy at this point...lost four chicks last year in fall to hawks...also, my flock is bigger and there's more eyes looking out....if I ever get around to it, I'll be planting English Laurel and Holly trees for hawk safe zone....
