Thanks, I need to get my butt out of my husbands shop and outside to finish the Silkie coop. Why does it have to get dark at 5pm! I'm ready for bed at 8! :barnie

I will keep PeakyBeaky in mind, thank you!

@Troyer when I finally have the opportunity for Roos, I will be coming to you. Even you rejects are stunning. :D

One sure sign we will get no snow- I bought a new snow shovel! I can go insure it by making sure my snowblower starts easily before the cold weather sets in! And buy tie chains for the car.
that only works for a couple of winters, then watch out!!! bought husband a brand new top of the line snow blower a couple of years ago, he could have used it for the first time last winter, I F we had been here, still hasn't used it

If you need to, you can put a 'hawk protector' out....it is a 4x8 piece of plywood with four legs cut from a 2x4.....the chooks will run under and most hawks will not try to land and go under...the best plan is to plant bushes around your property for your crew to run under if a hawk flys over...my crew is pretty savy at this point...lost four chicks last year in fall to hawks...also, my flock is bigger and there's more eyes looking out....if I ever get around to it, I'll be planting English Laurel and Holly trees for hawk safe zone....

we have a couple bushes and the woods next door but we're planning to put more bushes in. They have their covered run also but I may make a hawk protector or two.dI'd be heartbroken to lose anyone to a hawk or fox or anything. A month or so ago, one of our neighbors said they saw a coyote run through his yard. I think we kept our crew in for a few days after we heard that but haven't seen anything yet.

I also bought 4 birds from Peakybeaky in the spring. They were beautiful little sweethearts. Unfortunately, they were with my first group of chicks, whom the dogs got ahold of. I do know that when I'm in the market for wyandottes again, I'll be sending her a message again.

Good after noon all:

Been off for a couple of days and have noticed alot of hawk activity (all red tailed)...for the past three days they've flown in (meaning at or below tree top level) two have perched in neighbor's trees about 50yds from the hiding flock). I have chased them off on all occasions, but, as the leaves are falling they are being real aggressive....hopefully the coming cold snap will get them to leave....just a heads up...

I've been spending a lot of time down indelaware and I am amazed at the number of hawks! At any given time I can look up in the sky and count at least six or more! They are everywhere!
How's the flock doin? I hear you have a new little peep! Pics?

..her birds are handled on a more regular basis, makes being tending to them much easier!

Hey FF:

Your crew is doing great!, Can't tell you how friendly they are....."Homey" is a fav, she's a peach.....and yes, one little one hanging out...pics to come...have to check in a bit...tonight, mom decided to roost and not go to the nesting box....baby(4-5wks) was whining quite a bit at dusk...

If you get back in this neck of the woods, come by for a visit...

Quick question: I have a cute little frizzled serama hen. What should I do with her in winter?

I tried to knit her a sweater, but it was a flop. Her legs keep getting stuck up in it and I'd find her laying on the coop floor all stressed out and tangled up. So... dangerous.

Oh poor little baby lol. I did a test tonight with my mama and her babies. They'll be 5 weeks old this week. I closed off the little coop to see what she would do. She took then all into the main run but abandoned them and went to roost leaving the babies out in the run alone. They were crying quite pitifully lol. They just can't figure out the ramp yet so they wouldn't follow her in. I opened the little coop back up and kicked her out of the main coop again. She was quick to gather her babies and run to the other coop with them lol. How does that work anyway? Will she actually get them into the main coop eventually or will she just abandon them when she's done with them?

Regarding the Hybrid Poplars - they do grow really fast. Poplars are closely related to willows and they are all known to be very easy from cuttings. They will even root in a bucket of water, but transitioning them to soil is harder than just rooting them in very moist soul. If anyone is interested in either Hybrid Poplars or Pussy Willows, I would be happy to give you cuttings.

While on the subject of giving things away, would anyone like a Blue Ameracauna roo? He's about a year old and came from Whitmore Farms. I just don't need him for breeding and wanted to see if anyone else wanted him before I set him free. I have several other roos too, but he's the most "special".
