I suppose one way to define "worth" is how much you can get someone to pay. Maybe he'll find a buyer, but I hope he's not holding his breath.

I once sold 6 small fish, each about an inch long, to someone for $160. And they paid $40 for overnight shipping to Hawaii. Supply and demand you know, I was the only supplier and promised to give him a year head start before I sold any others. I'm pretty sure he thought it was a bargain.

If they were AC's, or the very similar Svart Havornas (probably spelled that wrong), then they might be worth it, but clearly they are not (red comb is a giveaway). Anyone buying those now needs to be very careful, lots of people trying to make a quick buck selling eggs for $20 each that might be leghorns for all you know.

I totally understand about the whole.".it's worth as much as someone wants/willing to pay"...I have seen pics of those black chickens..really neat, but worth that kind of $$, well I guess I just don't "get-it"...I know nothing about them anyway.
yeah, really taking a chance on eggs, unless you know who you are dealing with.

Last I checked, roosters were chickens. There are some rare, recently imported breeds that do command high prices. Their value is dependent on the buyers desire to be the first to own. That said, it would seem those who own such rare breeds would be well aware of what they have, their value and what to call a young hen. Or maybe they lay golden eggs. If so, $200 is a bargain. Eta: I believe there is a rare pure black chicken, but those look chipmunk to me. I know she's not special to anyone else, but my free silkie mix hen is gorgeous. She is solid black (beak, toes, wattles comb etc.). She is kind of a feral transplant, but for that reason can really hold her own. She has smooth feathers, but has retained the "puff" on top of her head. She is also consistently laying an egg every other day. (Go figure, my best layers are were free chickens!) She's just a mutt, but her solid black coloring and hardiness are something I wish I could duplicate. She is not very friendly, but definitely the smartest of the bunch. Because she's all black he name is Malificent.

ChickenCanoe contacted the guy with the rare black chickens on the Craigslist you amuse me thread. This is what he posted: Well I just got off the phone with the guy that has the rare black chickens. He got them from an exterminator that told him black chickens are rare. They were a gift for a kid but they didn't want them. He doesn't know anything about chickens and didn't realize there were different breeds. He just thought they came in colors. I guess like a macaw or parakeet. When he finds out the breed, he'll call me back. Updates to come. I'm sorry, I just had to contact him.

Yes I did. However, I just got a call back and he said they were Ayam Cemani. but not pure black. He said one was 80% AC and one was 90%, He said he was going to drop the price since they're living in the house and has no where to keep them.

That's very interesting! Who knew?

Not buying the 80 and 90 percent. That would take quite a few generations and I'm not sure they've been imported that long, lol.

Yeah, I'm a skeptic, my family motto is " you can't prove that " (pictures don't count, we have family members who are very good with Photoshop and CGI we have family portraits that were made over time in different locations and most people can't tell)

Has anyone ever seen a 4 week old chick stand up to a full grown hen? Today, one of Midnight's babies stood up to Cloud while she was chasing Midmorning away. Being a natural mother, Cloud just looked at the little brat and walked away lol. He had his little hackles up and evening, standing all tall and bossy lol.

Oh yeah, the whole reason I got on here lol. My husband turned to me today and said that I need to get the incubator going. I think I'm still in shock lol. He wants more for food but still, he's giving me permission to get hatching! WOOO! Now I just need the girls laying again lol

That is the biggest downside to a "barnyard mix", they are, almost by definition, one of a kind (except for controlled hybrids like the commercial sex links). We have some beautiful roos around the farm, and even some hens that look like their sisters (very possible), but breeding them together would result in their heterozygous characteristics segregating into chickens that look different than either parent. Unless you know the original cross, you will never be able to sort out the genetics and make another Malificent

sounds like..blah-blah-..trying to get someone who doesn't know to pony-up their wallet...people will do & say anything for $$...

I decided to lighten -up on the food (layer) , a little...as it is milder right now and I have been feeding well above the mark...going to see what this does...

Oh, to anyone wondering... the hot peppers haven't done much..obviously..been about a week with that concept and I am almost out of hot pepper seeds...not using my saved from the garden either!
DH asked if there was such a thing as "egg-strogen" for chickens??...hahaha, he can be amusing in his own mind sometimes..

Ok so i'm on again for what have become my rare visits.... I miss hanging with you folksies....


So I have an odd problem for December ..... I have too many eggs!!!! I'm getting approx 2 doz eggs a day. My primary source of egg sales (a local farm produce store) closes from December to May). I'm hesitant to hang the eggs for sale sign out because the store wants up to 10 doz eggs a week during season.... and the sign would have to come down again .....


I did start up the incubator though. I'm collecting all orpington, white rock, sumatra, bantam wyandotte, and freedom ranger/orpington cross eggs that get laid right now. I have decided I need to investigate stocking 3 - 4 incubators & hatchers to be able to track which chicks come from which parents from birth. I've even looked at adding dividers into the hatching incubator to help track that because I can easily label the eggs collected. I have something like 12 heat lamps at the moment so setting up several small brooders isn't a problem until I can get them toe punched.

I also find myself with some spare cockerels (imagine that....)

I have 1 white rock cockerel and 3 splash orpington cockerels. All are less than 1 year old. I can get $5 each for them from the local Amish - but I thought I'd see if anyone here was interested first. There may be a few more orpington cockerels - I need to get them divided out to see what I'm keeping. As of right now I definitely have Rock and orpington eggs for hatching if people are interested and want to take a chance on them with the cold.

My daughter also has 3 sumatra cockerels she'd like to sell for $5 each. They are beautiful birds - but the combs would be DQ'd at shows so we're not keeping them at all.
