Off topic, but since we are all animal experienced... Does anyone have any experience with Chinchillas (the live ones, not granny's coat). Hubby is looking into it, but I'm not convinced. Looks like they poop a lot and need dust baths, etc. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've never had Chinchillas, but for furry animals as pets, I feel like you can't beat a rabbit. Breed choice makes a big difference in temperment, though I'm sure there are some individual differences. I had them (New Zealand Reds and Black Dutch) as a boy and they were not well tamed, but when my oldest was a teen she got a pair of Angoras and they were the best rabbits ever. They didn't breed much (the buck had a hard time figuring out which end was which and made the doe a bit indignant), but we had a few litters and every baby was so sweet and gentle also. I miss them and wholeheartedly recommend them for pets.

Put my first ever CCL eggs in lockdown last night

Planning to move about 40 chickens into their final breeder pens today. Hopefully, all the simultaneous upheaval will make it easier to work out the new pecking orders everywhere.

How exciting! Good luck with your hatch D !!!

Collected 42 eggs tonight, and my niece said she got 6 this morning. I think some might have been from yesterday, since I found 3 eggs in the CCL pen with only 2 hens. One was a turkey egg too. The ones laying the most are the mixed breeds and the Barred Hollands (from eggs from msladyhawke).

Awesome! Told ya last winter they were laying thru the winter. Glad yours didn't make a fool of me lol!!! Whew.

Thank you. The eggs I got from you and hatched last spring produced a bunch of beautiful birds laying a lot of eggs now. It is sooo tempting to start hatching Barred Hollands and Ameracaunas now. I'm trying to hold off on everything but CCL's and Turkeys until the first of the year, but it's tough to put those eggs into the fridge to sell for eating.

Completed the big chicken move today and all seemed at peace when I checked on them at dusk. With all the breeds separated I will be able to tell better which ones are producing best. And the eggs will be purebreds (or intentional hybrids) now, for when I do start incubating.

Hopefully no more filling water bottles for the rabbits! Just finished a nipple system with brass spring loaded nipples in PVC. Found a 16 gallon heated stock tub and using a pond pump for continuous circulation so it doesn't freeze. Still need to carry water, but no more frozen bottles (I hope).

Now to figure out how to circulate up the hill for the chickens.

I am 120 posts behind. We are about to head out to. Hershey for a gymnastics meet, I'll catch up reading on the way if I can convince DH to drive. I'm sure I'll pass a few of you along the way....

awesome! I did the whole gymnast thing, for quite some time too, meets are intense but fun! ,..had a cousin go to college on a scholarship doing it!
Love her outfit!

I do have some birds left, but only enough to breed forwrd and the ones I still have will be culled in the Spring after I start hatching their eggs. The only breed that I did not save breeder birds from are the BLue laced red Wyandottes. Instead, I saved eggs from them and they hatched last week. I can't decide if we want to keep this breed or not. I really enjoy the chicks, they are super cute.
