Has anyone heard about all of this Avian Influenza? It's affecting the Pacific Northwest right now, but I'm afraid it could spread here in spring and summer. What are your guys' thoughts?
 
We had some type of illness spread to our ducks before from transient geese and ducks visiting our ponds. They tested positive at an auction and someone came to try and catch our ducks to test them further but the whole thing kinda fizzled out. I hope it doesn't..

I worked in the poultry industry in the early '80's when a very large portion of the industry in this area was absolutely devastated by AI.

closed flock and biosecurity are the only safeguards. Fee range and open runs where wild birds can get in will almost assure if it spreads you will be affected. Only solution is flock destruction, disinfection, and starting over.

Don't want to sound doom and gloom, but it is highly contagious.
 
left y guard down for 2 hours to go make a garage appointment for my broken car and came back to this.

I just trimmed a lot (over a cup) of fat off a ham I was cutting up for meal sized freezer storage. Can the girls have it? I know they are omnivores but some things just aren't good for them.

And it was Miss Vicki Chicky that is laying. Saw her in the nestbox area right before I got the egg. And I think maybe Niko the BO will be laying soon.

I don't have a run, but I have been babysitting lately. Maybe I can save up for run materials... my flock free ranges, but I can't afford to lose them if it does become a problem on this side if the US.
