SilkieSensation, how far are you from Beaver County, PA? I'm possibly interested in some turkeys and travel east to the Lehigh Valley pretty frequently (and Coatesville isn't too far out of the way). If you wanted (and hubs agrees, bc I haven't asked him about turkeys yet, lol) I could pick some up for both of us and I could meet up with you out here somewhere if you and/or Chicadoodle don't want to worry about shipping.

so do we need to worry about avian flu?

I just read a very informative article about AI recently that made me feel a lot better. I can't remember where I read it, but to summarize it, there are a lot of different strains (like the flu strains we try to vaccinate people for) and they vary quite a lot in terms of danger to the birds and transmissability to people. The main carriers are wild birds, and the worst of those are waterfowl, especially if they co-mingle with our domestics on a pond or open pen. It made me think I might just avoid ever keeping waterfowl as a way to reduce the chance of infection. Bad strains pass quickly through flocks and kill a lot of the birds, those get heavily quarantined if discovered, they will come and remove and kill every bird on your place.

AFAIK, no people-contagious strains have been found in the US, that would certainly raise a huge alarm in the press. I suppose the likelihood of that happening eventually is pretty high, hence the efforts to contain all strains, personally, I think it's partially about control for the birds sake, and partially about testing the readiness of our response if the worst happens.

I live about 5 minutes away from Chicadoodle, I will be at State College on March 11th? And can transport that far, if the poults are GUARANTEED to be picked up that morning. I'm attending a CPT course at State College and no poultry is allowed on the grounds for Biosecurity reasons.
