Someone asked about a week ago about quail.
They hatch like chickens, but their incubation period is different by species.
They jump, they fly. Brooders must be covered.
Feed, water, etc, like chickens. Temps the same when brooding. It's a good idea to put marbles in the waterer so they don't drown.
My previous experience with bobwhite is they are very flighty. It's entertaining to others when a dozen get out of the brooder and you are running around the house trying to catch them. They can easily fly to the top of a ten foot ceiling at 5 weeks. Not so funny if your doing the catching. A butterfly net from the dollar store helps.

Obviously can't free range.
I have a bobwhite that has spent the last two winters in an outside cage with three solid sides, solid roof, write bottom and front. Not sure how cold tolerant other breeds are. My cots will be kept in an heated barn.

They only need 1 square foot or less of space as adults. A lot can be kept in a small space.

My total hatch was 22. The eggs incubated on their sides did better than those in turners then laid on their sides, but there were other variables, so no definitive result.

thanks for the link re avian flu.................I was reading recently on a forum on this site re avian flu

If you follow the links they list articles etc.........

some have rather differing views on things...........

one worry is that ALL your chickens are killed if the avian flu is in the area.

I understand it is very contagious and can have a big influence.................tends to be spread by waterfowl and other wild birds.

clean coop and birds contained in a run free from contact with wild birds seems the best defense and perhaps a little luck that it does not come to your area.

Not letting the chickens free range at all seems like a big hardship to me.................

if there are no reports of avian flu in PA then I feel it might be okay to free range............I can only really let them out of the run starting in the spring for like a hour after I come home from work and then on the weekends............but they do very much enjoy this.

I will continue to read about this.............I hope it can be contained to the west coast...........yet wild birds do migrate..............large distances............generally north/south but still...........

they have some information webinars and video links thru the link you shared as well.................

Lisa:

My previous question about AI is relevant to you...you have been to my locale and I have been to your place...even in a pen, wild birds fly through...and I still don't know how far chooks will range...my crew stays in my back yard.... why keep them penned??? I think AI is like lightening....if it hits you...thats life....my two cents

stake----I agree with you .................

I just was reading about what folks out on the west coast were experiencing and recommending.............

I honestly just hope it does not come east...............

I think there would be very little concern by regulators re: backyard flocks............they would just cull them all to "play it safe"

on a more positive note

it is more common around waterfowl...............and we dont have lakes or ponds etc in our yards or that close by................

In the US, production poultry farms are really big..vs everywhere else..it makes the impact of AI or anything else bigger....think of this farm getting hit...http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/wegmans-cruelty/ ....seven digit loses....
