I wish I could get the rest of the family off of the "eww" factor where sheep milk is concerned. With the larger freezer, I should probably get extra milk from the dairy and freeze it. I HATE being forced to the store over milk.

I often sell birds past the brooder stage. Sometimes POL. They are generally birds that don't fit in my breeding plans. Often yellow and blue orpingtons, sometimes Swedish flower hens, sometimes EE. Probably sold several dozen last year.

I rarely sell small chicks.

Love it!  That's a nice little flock from the box of eggs I sent off what seems like ages ago.

I have to agree I've really fallen in love with the rhodebars. They're so curious and friendly. I hope they keep that personality as they grow, I love it! It's really hard to believe that is been 6 weeks already since you sent those eggs. I'm so thrilled that you did lol.

I know this doesn't help you NOW, but you can freeze milk. I have stores of sheep milk in the freezer to hopefully hold me over until I can milk again.

At least we know now for future reference. I know we'll be stocking up from now on. Threes nothing worse than running out of the good stuff and having to get the regular stuff from the store.

That was my first try at mailing eggs and I was a bit surprised at how well it worked. I could send you more Rhodebar eggs, we are starting to eat some now, they are laying so well, but a pair is a great start, by late summer you'll be having your own eggs to set. I wish you had a few Welsummer pullets. Maybe if we get a "delivery service" going I can send you some of them to go with your little boy.

I really like farm fresh milk also, and I've got a great connection to get it here. I think it's more digestible than processed milk, but mostly it tastes better.

I just had a conversation with hubs about our options with the extreme cold... We had tracks coming up from the woods to our coop this morning, turned out to be 2 sets of tracks that converged - deer from the woods and probably stray cat that walked around the chicken run. I went out to investigate when I replaced the chickens frozen water this morning (they HAVE learned to eat snow for water when the water in their coop is frozen!) and noticed Romeo's comb is looking more frostbitten Turns out the black schmutz on it last week was just some kind of schmutz as it mostly came off in the last few days, but now the skin of his comb is definitely gray-ish... not just on the tips, but down farther on his comb. I feel terrible, but even on these ridiculous cold days he and the girls have been outside, it doesn't seem to bother him at all. Hubs and I talked about putting a light out there for tonight, but he is opposed to anything electrical for fear of fire. I am going to untangle the rope for the run door so I can at least close that overnight and I secured the tarp around the back of the coop so that it was tighter and can seal up the drafts better. We are going to add more bedding tonight too, I'm not sure what else we can do. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who is worried about their chickens in this cold... I was feeling like a bad chicken mama. So, everything that is black/gray on his comb is going to atrophy and fall off? Poor boy, he was so handsome. I should have made him a chicken hat, I wonder if he'd actually wear it? LOL

That chicken hat is so funny! Doubt they keep it on for long though...

Thanks for the offer but I think my husband would KILL me if I got anymore eggs right now lol. I'll probably just wait until the end of summer when I have my flock rearranged and organized and just bed from these two. That little welsummer, he's such a sweet heart! Are all welsummers that friendly? I definitely wouldn't mind a little pullet to go with him though hubby might flip. Then again, he never knows exactly how many chickens we have at any one time anymore lol

Both my CCL roos have or are in the process of loosing their combs...I also have just about every pullet aside from the GLW that has some frostbite...since I don't show, its not as bad as I know both roos have 7-8 points and all things considered, my pair of boys are keepers....this weather is tough on all and so far my crew is hanging in there....keep an eye on possible infections..my main roo had some issues last year and I had to pull him inside and medicate for a week...my two cents...

He is special. He was the lone survivor of my first hatch. This is only picture I have of him. but he is result of a speckled sussex rooster over a red sex link. He is very friendly
This was his when he was about 10 weeks old.

Just my two cents....but, nothing wrong with a second roo if you have enough girls....I keep a second to back up my main guy...and everybody gets along.....I keep about 12-15 so each roo has their favs....

I keep 3-4 roos with 20-30 hens and never go below 2 roos. Always keep a backup. Each boy will pick his favorite girls.
