some of the girls found the compost pile

they were collecting the potato peels I just threw in lol.
looks like they are having some "chicken-fun"! That is a nice compost set-up there!
I may be doing this all wrong, but I don't have a separate compost heap any more. I just throw all the stuff into the run. I plan on digging it out later, after it has passed through the chicken filter. I put kitchen waste and yard waste in there.
that works too...i "turn-over" the run every year,...multiple times...it really does help keep everything "fresher", & they love the little "tid-bits"

of critters that pop up while i am doing it...they are also getting the garden right now, nothing is planted yet..well..garlic, but it is fenced off.

I'm not supposed to have the wood stove going at this time of year!
no..no your not...and i shouldn't have to run the extra heaters at night either, but here we are

....25th of April ..wouldn't know it if it weren't for the calendar telling us it is.

Basically, people would pay to have me raise their meat chickens for them. They would "buy" the chick upfront and a small payment for feed ($5). Then when the bird is ready to slaughter they pay for the rest of the feed and take their birds to be processed. There are several Amish in the area who process for $2 a bird - so I do not process myself. I usually barter for my processing. They keep 1 bird out of every 5. This gets around NYS regs legally.

sounds like a good thing going there...if you are willing to raise'em..good to go!

Sounds like a good deal.. but how do you find ducks at a reptile show??? LOL

Trust me that the EMT lady doesn't follow too many safety rules herself! (except seat belts.... those I do use)
I even tear the tags off of pillows!

uuhhmmm.... frogs and turtles are both good and sometimes either raised for food or hunted for food.  In fact, there is a season and limits listed for them in the Pa Fishing laws.
a string of red Christmas lights strung around the brooder would take care of the lighting issue without overheating the area.  And most light strings are pretty easy on electric.

You take the tags off pillows?! You do live on the edge!

I'm getting chicks tomorrow!!! Be prepared for the overdose of pictures! :jumpy

I have been told there always was a check box that says are you NPIP on the USPS form....I know a number of folks that just checked it and nobody questioned...since there's alot of AI out west, they are probably enforcing the regs....

Interesting. I've only shipped twice, once to PA, once to OH. I didn't fill out any forms. I did tell them both times they were eggs and one was marked live embryos. Either the two post offices here don't care, or they don't follow regulations. The one time I did have to check a little electronic box that said they were liquid (are eggs liquid), but that was as far as it went. That was on Tuesday. The local one they asked the same question and I said they were eggs.

Guess I'm only shipping glass ornaments now. Or, as my brother marked on his cases of incandescent light bulbs when he moved "fragile as clay pigeons". Yeah, my whole family is different.

FYI...was just at Rural King in St Clairsville, they have, buff orps pullets, ginnies, lots of barred rocks pullets, Australorps ,black sexlinks thats all I can remember but they have alot,, 2.99 per chick

I picked up my meaties and turkeys today!!!

Now the fun begins! They look good! We have about 50 CX which will (thankfully) be ready in the next couple of weeks....

Today I am pressure canning broth, onion soup, chicken and making chicken mush for use with the dogs.....
When we process 2 or 3 roosters we just freeze all of the meat, bones and organ meat and then when we have a large enough amount we take a day and process it the rest of the way.

so far today the total is 9 qts of chicken broth, 5 qts of rooster in a jar, 6 pints of onion soup and about 5 lbs of chicken mush.

Now I need to figure out what to make for dinner!
