Sure, I can always spare some eggs. Let her sit on some golf balls or wooden eggs for a few days to see if she's committed. I find that just putting them into a different coop breaks all my broodies (except for the cochin bantams and silkies).

I think all the large fowl hens we have just don't have the genetic disposition to commit to much. I found 4 broodies in the 4 nest boxes in the main layer pen today. I moved them all to the bachelor rooster coop that has nest boxes to see if any of them really want to sit on eggs, I bet none of them will be in the nest boxes next time I check. Silly hens - think they are tricking me into giving them eggs to hatch when they are not "all in".

Thanks! I will let you know, she is making all of the "broody noises" that I have heard before. The only difficult thing is that I can't tell if this is the same chicken that went broody in December. I have two bantam Langshans and the one was a very good Mam! But I dont know if this is the same one. I will be watching her very closely for the next few days....:D. If she doesn't quit, I'll try to move her. Last year even I tried to break me of these girls, it took 3-4 days in the broody breaker.

All fluffed up. Kicked her out 3 times yesterday.

Has it on here that I was told about using sand in brooder box? I was curious about which sand?... construction... heard some have silica. How about the ground walnut or calcium sand for reptiles?

If you get your sand in bulk it can be any finer type sand, some construction type sand has a lot of larger gravel pieces in it, my preference is a sand with approx at least 75% fine grain and less than 25% small gravel (smaller then size of a pea). This makes it easier for me to clean/sift. Finding a source for dry sand is often difficult.

If you are only doing a small amount you can get bagged play sand at Lowes for about $4 / # 50 bag which I really like to use..

That's funny. My girl, when I open up the nest box, she clucks and fluffs up her feathers, especially her butt feathers.

I think my bantam Cochin wandered into the coop to lay an egg, and the broody must have chased here out. All I saw was the Cochin screaming and running away from the coop.

Certain breeds are still selling really well, the past few weeks I have sold all the Ameraucanas I can hatch before they are dry, but I have a lot of extra BCM's and Olive Eggers. I'm not too concerned because it's warm enough they can go outside fairly young and both of those sex out quickly (compared to Ams with their pea combs). I really won't mind raising a few dozen extra pullets, if I can't sell them all, I would like to free range a bunch of them. I never need to "fire sale" them away like TSC does because I can raise and release them, and make more money (in the long run) than selling them for $1.

Last year, my most desperate customers contacted me right after "chick days" was over. They did the "right thing" and got their coop built first, but then when they went to TSC for chicks, there were none to be had. Anyone know when "chick days" ends this year? I should be prepared for that.
When I stopped at my local TSC yesterday, there were no chicks of any kind and they had already put away the chick bins. There was one bin out - not labeled - so I don't know if it hadn't been cleaned up yet or if they just had it out in case they got a late shipment.

I just got some chicken nipples at tractor supy, figure I'll put them in the bottom of a bucket. Has anyone used this method of watering? Do your birds figure it out quickly?

Thanks, I gonna hang the nipple watered in the tractor for my broilers, might make another for my layers. The dog will not be able to drink their water now!!!

Ok so I have lost my mind. I went and bought more chicks. I couldn't pass them up. I don't have bantams and they were so darn cute. So do any have any ideas what I should expect out of them?
