So I have officially graduated from Dad to Official Chick Holder. How do I know this you say? Because when I get home from work the words "Hi Dad" are no longer said by my 5 year old. They have been replaced with "Do you want to hold a chick?" or "Can we hold a chick?"

That's awesome! Enjoy it while it lasts. Soon it will be, can I use the car?

I hope no one is offended by this. This was on my husband's tech forum and I thought it was cute.

Dear people that know everything,
I have been dealing with things the best I know how. So, not very well. I am now looking to you for your Yoda wisdom.
Are the jalapeño peppers going to live?
And what do I do about this? Last year this was my pumpkin and cucumber patch. The final coop cleaning was dumped in there, thinking that my husband would till it in for me. He didn't find the time before winter came, and ... Well, I now have beautiful grass and dandelions. I need this area for my strawberry plants ASAP. How should I deal with this?

Many may not like my answer, but Roundup or the generic equivalent.

Just be sure to follow the label concerning time to replant with live plants.

Option two would be black plastic with holes for the plants, but that will probably overheat the soil for strawberries.

Option three is a lot of weed pulling.

As for the pepper, I doubt it..I wouldn't plant before this weekend here, and you are further north. I'm cautious on tropical plants. Peppers and tomatoes are tropicals, I believe.

Ok so I have lost my mind. I went and bought more chicks. I couldn't pass them up. I don't have bantams and they were so darn cute. So do any have any ideas what I should expect out of them?
They are adorable... but like was already said... you are entering a new level of chicken math with these!!! Now it won't just be you wanting to add to the coop, you will likely end up with a bunch of grumpy broody banties who all feel it is their personal mission to repopulate the chicken world! :gig
You've got that right!, but man, are they cute, or what?!
I was told at TSC today someone bought all 400+ they had left yesterday. And it wasn't wingstone. Or me.
Coffee Through The Nose.... :lau

If you can till it up really well, do that, then plant the strawberries. If you rake it after tilling, a lot of the weeds will get pulled off, the rest you will just need to pull as they come back, but with the ground tilled and the weeds not well rooted, they will pull very easily. Dandelions are the very favorite for all my poultry, from chickens to peas.

Planting peppers and tomatoes now is pretty safe. The critical thing for crops is the night temps, now that they are mostly above 50, the plants will really start to grow fast.

so the 4-H Poultry Shows are officially cancelled due to the AI outbreak. Boo. I keep reading the various reports and haven't seen any confirmed cases in PA, I think they're just trying to be safe at this point.
