Hey everyone, I found an awesome recipe for a spray for the cops to kill and repel bugs, lice, mites, parts, ect.
2 Oz water
2 Oz white vinegar
15 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
10 drops peppermint essential oil
10 drops tea tree essential oil

It's really rather amazing :)

8 of the 10 New Hampshires didn't develop. One Maran didn't of the 5. One of the Ameracaunas died. Final count is 1 Ameracauna, 2 New Hampshires and 4 Maran. She moved them to under the coop.

Not a terrible hatch. I was thinking the New Hampshires were not very fertile. That strain has been sort of problematic for me, but since you are wanting to breed them to other for meat, you don't need a lot, I'm glad you got 2 of them. Marans have a reputation for being harder to hatch, but I guess the broody hen knew exactly what to do.

Next question in this hatch experience - how long do I wait for the unhatched ones? She is still sitting on them with the fuzz balls so when do I remove them? I am in no hurry if she isn't. Just don't have a clue what I am doing (can you tell?)

LB:

Give it days....I have had hatches on day 24(in the bater)....but, keep a close eye on things...if a chick gets away from mom, she may not leave the eggs to get it....my last broody hatch, hatched three and left the rest of the eggs a day later...(I suppose she knew that was it).....my two cents....

I'm worried sick. For the past month I've been losing baby chicks every week. At first I thought there was something wrong with the chicks that hatched, it was a first time broody and she wasn't always on the nest. They hatched almost 4 days late. Then more starting dying. I would find one or maybe even two every week. All of those chicks died. Now I'm starting to lose the ones from tractor supply. They are at least 5 weeks old. Seem healthy and then I'll find one dead. No marks or sign of a struggle. My friend mentioned the bird flu and it has thrown me into a panic. I saved the body of the chick I found today and emailed the dept of agriculture. Hoping they can test it. Any other ideas? All of my adult birds seem fine. Still laying everyday. No deaths. I'm just sick over this.

Did they limp or lose strength before they died? I've had 3 lose strength in one leg, then the other, and then they get so weak we end up culling them to put them out of their suffering. I mailed one to the dept. of ag. today too. I suspect avian encephalomyelitis (? probably butchered the spelling), but am getting tested to be sure. You may want to look into AE, it INfects older birds, but doesn't AFFECT them. They can pass it on to the chicks, and it kills them but adults show no signs.

edited for spelling
