I did Cornish cross last year but not moyers, I'm gonna do more cx this year. Have you butchered any cx from moyers? Did any die or did they all make it to weight?

i love the ending of this post............one day............taa daa................all laying in one big chicken pile.....................this is what I am hoping for!

so I have some serious training to do! OR just let the strongest win? I will never be able to just let them get injured , if I can prevent it................minor scuffs...........okay............but life threatening battles.................cant do it.

Thanks! Taa Daa is my mental thought when I saw them chilaxing, sun and dust bathig in the same spot, that did take a couple weeks.

I agree, no physical damage is acceptable, from my flock, in free range mode, i don't remember anything more than a little non physical fussing, couple air pecks and maybe a little chase, once. But mostly they went their own ways, but gradually getting closer until they were one group during the day ranging and then to their own coops at night, there was never confusion over who lived where, which I didn't expect. I thought a couple of the grown hens wanted to go to bed with the other group, but didn't. There are still preferred friends, but no fussing at all. The big hens don't do anything, but the the bantams act like they are being persecuted.

If I had to do it in a pinch...I would put them in at night and then in the morning (read this technique here on BYC) make a big ruckus!!! Kick over feed, bang walls, shake pens...rearrange everything. So it's all such a complete distraction they barely notice that someone is "new" and bond against the craziness.


Maybe keep them seperate a bit longer while you travel, so you can manage it when you get back?




God, I am verbose...annoying, I am aware of it.

A little bit of fence would work, because in a neighborhood, there shouldn't be much daytime predator pressure! Little like 100 ft of welded wire, with fiberglass step in posts... the posts are under $2 each and you only need one every 10 ft. and you can move it. Not easily I will tell you the truth, but it does rearrange nicely if you don't take it all down at once. you might have to clip wings if you do 3 ft, 4ft is better.

Oh and a couple days training of calling, here chick chick with treats, scratch, braead, diced tomato and they will follow you right into the pen.

now that I think of it, our meaties from last year were from Moyer's too, they grew out nicely, lost none. This year's group is only a few weeks old, spent their first night outside last night, just in time for the storm, I haven't checked them yet. But the group is looking really good so far.

No baby goats yet, leaving for the doctor shortly,I'm certain that's what she's been waiting for...

And yes, she is waiting for you to leave her in peace so she can push out those babies. Now git!! Lol

@SilkieSensation, how are those babies doing? The poults from you are growing like weeds! The one pure blue slate is a chatty, noisy little thing lol. There hasn't been anymore strutting though.

I just picked up 4 more Bourbon red poults so I should have some eggs or poults next year

I lost 1 but still have 2 black & the buff. They are getting big. I'm actually amazed 3 survived. I had to leave my 19 yr old in charge of my animals for a week & lost all my quail & a bunch of chicks. He just had no clue how to take care of them & a bunch ended up wet & cold.

I'm waiting for babies soon. When I let the girls out this morning, my broody was in the wrong nesting box because someone else "needed" to lay in her box . There was a chick that had tried to hatch, but died, looks like it bled out or another chicken ate the yolk. I don't know. Then broody Mama went to outside for a break. Hoping I have at least 1 Rhodebar pullet hatch. There are five eggs left. They were supposed to hatch Wednesday, but my broody girls are early birds. . I'm pretty sure this is her first real try at hatching out chicks, so I'm sure there will be a learning curve. Here's hoping she hears peeps and does her thing. She has been a very dedicated broody so far.

Does anyone know what could suddenly cause a poult to start limping? I have a 3 week old mix that I put in with the new poults that I brought home yesterday to teach them to eat and drink and everything. First thing this morning he was fine but now he's limping and laying around. He keeps lifting his foot and looking all around his leg. I don't see any swelling or feel anything out of place. I did check his Achilles tendon on his hock and it feels lIke it's fine and in place but he seems to squint when I mess with it. Maybe he twisted it and it's sore right now? Ideas?

Oh no! I'm sorry you lost so many I'm glad you so have the 3 though.

I'm actually amazed my losses weren't far worse. It was an emergency or he never would have been left in charge.

Sounds like a minor injury, probably from jumping around. Just keep an eye on it for now.
