I love seeing the birds growing and enjoying themselves!

I second Stakes caution on the raccoon, I don't like seeing them out during the day either. Sturgis should make some noise to let you know if something strange is around the yard though... he is such a cutie!!

I highly recommend "poop boards" with a 2x4 as a roost placed a few inches above the board. I make my poop boards 2 ft wide and the length of the roosts. Underneath is the perfect place for nest boxes, feeders, waterers, pop door for the outside, etc. - leaving the rest of the area largely open space. If you search on this site for "poop boards", you will find a lot of info. Mine are pretty simple, I put feed bags in top to catch the poop and just fold them up and carry them out to dump every month or so. Some people use sand or some kind of litter and scoop every day. I know I wouldn't follow through with the daily scooping, so I let the dropping accumulate there. Probably more work in the long run, but it works for me.

There is a thread somewhere about "inventions" people have made and it has a lot of neat ideas, if you haven't read that, you should.

Just adding, I used linoleum on my poop boards and scrape them off every couple days into a bucket. Maybe once a month, I go in and scrub them down. We just built our coop last year and the poop boards are the best advice that we followed through with on this site. HUGE help with keeping things clean.

I waited until 7:30 to go out to let the chickens out. It was just starting to drizzle, but I opened the door anyway. Steven came out of the coop, as well as four girls. The last two came out a few minutes later. They didn't go more than a few feet. Good thing! What I thought was a cat turned out to be a big raccoon!

Question. How would it lose its tail? The neighbor said it didn't have one.

MCC:

Racoons are night foragers, if you see one during the day, it probably isn't in good shape and might be a bit desperate.....might even be an indicator of Rabies....my two cents....

Mommas will be out during daylight if they are having trouble finding enough to feed their babies. This is the time of year for babies.

That sounds like a worthwhile upgrade. Did you glue the linoleum down or just leave it loose? I'm thinking if I left them loose I could swap them out one at a time of they needed thorough cleanings.

Just a follow up....you can do the 1'x1' peel and stick for about 35cents each at HD, or there is a products that comes 4' by whatever length you want that is a rubber mat that is used to line behind bath tubs....I used it in my brooder....my two cents.....

I glued it down and caulked (sp?) The back and sides against the walls. Works great and when I scrub them down, I just slather the water all over them without fear of it dripping down through the wood.
