I'm a bit sad and maybe also a bit relieved. A lot of the chicks I'm hatching from here on out will probably end up free ranging on the farm. Inquiries about buying chicks have dropped off dramatically.

I'd be interested in a CCL or three but don't have a bator or a broody.

I have lots of CCL chicks hatching too, but I don't ship and you're probably too far from Pottstown for a road trip. Maybe if we find the chicken express moving east to west sometime . . .

We lost a foster chicken today... I'm not sure what happened. Yesterday I noticed a poop in the chicken tractor that had a bit of blood in it but everyone looked fine so I had no idea who it came from. This morning I noticed the RIR roo (sorry @speney
!) had a little bit of a dirty butt, but he looked and acted fine otherwise. I even spent some time in the tractor with the birds this morning, working on petting them and hand-feeding them and he seemed just fine. I went down this afternoon when the kids got off the bus and he was dead in the middle of the run :( His head/neck was arched back but I couldn't see any injuries. No lice or other parasites that I could see. The back of his neck was plucked, but I'm guessing that happened post-mortem by his former friends - there weren't any injuries on his neck. His comb looked weird, like the color was drained out of it.

The only thing I could think of is that hubs spread some DE in all the chicken areas a few days ago and he isn't very careful about not making a big cloud of it in the air. They would have breathed it in when he spread it down and some got in their waterer but settled to the bottom. Could that have affected them? Any other reason a chicken would get blood in their poop and drop dead the next day??? I'm  hoping we aren't looking at anything that could spread to the other chickens. ***And sorry about your roo @speney

[/quot]it's ok it happens chickens can be fickle. And I hope all the others are ok and even though he was coming to me I'm sorry for your lose no matter what you always get attached a little.
 
The two hens that I have still seem healthy. Right now the one is laying every day. The other is laying every other day. I haven't noticed any blood in their stool and they seem to be eating and drinking just fine. Hope it was just that one incidence and not something that is infectious.

DE shouldn't have been the cause, while they shouldn't breathe it in as it can irritate the lungs (tiny microscopic cuts) and lead to infection in the lungs (if bacteria gets in) he wouldn't drop dead the next day unless he breathed in a lot. They commonly put DE in poultry feed and people will put it in their chickens water in order to de-worm them.
The only thing I think it would be is internal injury, as I don't think coccidiosis would him in only two days.

Let's hope it was just a freak accident,

traveling next weekend ...sept 25th... chicken train will run from lancaster to milroy.....

I will be at the cabin in new lancaster valley,,,anyone close by is welcome to swing on in and spend some time by the campfire...

Thank you! I was leaning towards that too. Modest matter to me as he will be rehomed, but I want to be honest with the new owners.

What will you do with all your free time now? Maybe see the rest of your family? :lol: If anybody wants some of the chicks I hatched, since they are a little older, let me know. You get first dibs!
