This bird is absolutely beautiful! How do you adopt a parrot? I'd love to do that :)

Just put my last load of carrots in the canner for tonight. That'll make 28 quarts today. I still have a bunch sliced and in the sink in water. Think they'll be ok in that overnight? I still have 1 more case of them to wash, slice, and can tomorrow. I'm guessing at least another 25 quarts worth

We looked on Craigslist and found this rescue. They are called A Helping Wing, and they have a great Facebook page. They are in Nj, near the Delaware Water Gap area. The woman who runs it has it operating out of her house. She has about 200 birds there right now!. Bring your earplugs! I'm sure there is probably a rescue closer to you. I would check petfinder.com, they have a great site.

And wow! You are a canning fool! I will learn someday.... For now I dehydrate.

i had planned on canning tomatoes today but instead planted some lettuce n spinach and did some major cleaning up of down branches in the goat pen. It took me 2 1/2 hours to do chores on Thursday with no extra cleaning tasks. One hour was spent grazing goats, but 1 1/2 hours for chickens? This has to be cut down. I like the idea of everyone free ranging together with just 2 large feeders and 2 large waterers offered, I'm not hatching right now so am not worried about cross breeding... Anyone have solutions on cutting chore time down?

when you aren't in breeding mode I would opt for a single flock area set up with a couple of food and water sources. we use a hanging 5gallon bucket deer feeder for our scratch mix, it can be scheduled to scatter twice a day but the birds have figured out they can get extra by pushing the scatter tray around themselves, so the roosters spin it with their beaks and call the hens to see what they 'found' for them.
Love the pics!

Here is the parrot we adopting/rescuing. Her name is Lucy and she is a 22 year old Eclectus. We pick her up Friday!

@dheltzel . Do all the bantam Cochin have feathered feet? I have 3 brown/tan chicks that have no feathers on their feet. I only had two Rhodebar eggs, and only one hatched. I think I may have gotten a Blue Maran too, I only have one large back chick, but two Marans eggs hatched.

Edited to add: that's my DH, and you can't see it, but he has a huge smile on his face.

Gorgeous! I can understand the smiles! I would bet you have been smiling a bit also!

Hi,
Tractor Supply on Route 30 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania just started carrying Naturewise Feather Fixer!!!
It is on sale for 15.00 a 40 lb. bag , reg. 15.99 a bag. I sure hope they continue to carry it. I need to finish the feed I have before I can switch over to it. Have been discussing it with other BYCer's who are using it with great success!

Subscribe to Nutrena's "Scoop From The Coop" blog online and every once and a while they email you a 2.00 Naturewise coupon.
Best,
Karen( in Ligonier)
Next closest place I know of that carries it is Rural King in Connellsville, PA.
Thanks for the heads up....
They also opened a Rural King near Butler.... Clearview Mall.

I'm guessing your kids really like carrots! That seems like a lot, and a ton of work you are doing!

Thank you for the info. It would be quite a while till i could manage to talk my husband's into one but at least more i know where to look :)

I do tend to wear myself out on canning. It gets exhausting!

It's ended up being a lot more than I expected actually. It's not really that my kids love carrots either. I just couldn't pass up $5 for a whole case of them. I'm just glad they only had 3 cases available. I may have really gotten myself into trouble!

I have to say, that rogue pumpkin plant did not yield any fruit this year, but darned if it wasn't the favorite chicken hiding spot! Those big leaves are just at the right height to provide a little shade and foraging fun. Today I couldn't find most of the chicks and I was going nutty. Well, they were just enjoying a little nap time under the pumpkin vine. I may plant one next year on purpose!

If you do that it'll probably die off before they can use it.

Speaking of pumpkins, I'm saving some seeds from THIS monster! We saw it at the Amish market listed for $20 so we couldn't resist bringing it home. The kids were ecstatic when they got home from school and saw it lol. I can only imagine the big shady vine it could produce for the girls to hide under lol

For those of you with roo's I've got a roo question. I've got a SLW roo named Kevin who is just over 5 months old. He has 6 girlfriends and no competition from any other roo's. Lately it seems like he is just spoiling for a fight. I've reached this conclusion from the way he looks at us humans. So far he hasn't done anything besides give us the side-eye like he wants to go a few rounds. I'm blaming it on him going through sexual maturity type of thing as lately it seems he has been "trying" to have his way with his girlfriends. Lots of squaking and hair pulling feathers flying and it doesn't seem like anything gets done. My question is this. Am I right in blaming this "him spoiling for a fight" on his reaching sexual maturity? I've had him since his was 1 week old and if it is the maturity thing than he will be given some leeway but if he's just being ornery for the sake of being ornery he'll lose his head over any fight he starts. He's pretty big and would make a delicious meal or two.

Chaos:

Sounds like he's normal....adolescent behavior and just being a roo....my two cents,,,,
