Speaking of pumpkins, I'm saving some seeds from THIS monster! We saw it at the Amish market listed for $20 so we couldn't resist bringing it home. The kids were ecstatic when they got home from school and saw it lol. I can only imagine the big shady vine it could produce for the girls to hide under lol

Auro:

Knew a guy who liked to grow extra large pumpkins....the trick is to pinch off all the other flowers after one pollinates....

For those of you with roo's I've got a roo question. I've got a SLW roo named Kevin who is just over 5 months old. He has 6 girlfriends and no competition from any other roo's. Lately it seems like he is just spoiling for a fight. I've reached this conclusion from the way he looks at us humans. So far he hasn't done anything besides give us the side-eye like he wants to go a few rounds. I'm blaming it on him going through sexual maturity type of thing as lately it seems he has been "trying" to have his way with his girlfriends. Lots of squaking and hair pulling feathers flying and it doesn't seem like anything gets done. My question is this. Am I right in blaming this "him spoiling for a fight" on his reaching sexual maturity? I've had him since his was 1 week old and if it is the maturity thing than he will be given some leeway but if he's just being ornery for the sake of being ornery he'll lose his head over any fight he starts. He's pretty big and would make a delicious meal or two.

Chaos:

Sounds like he's normal....adolescent behavior and just , being a roo....my two cents,,,,

I agree with stake, growing pains ... and frustrated teenage rooster energy. Our young roos often spar quite energetically amongst them selves to vent energy and flex their muscles, so to speak. If he did not have a sparring partner then he probably is wanting to flex his authority muscles and is watching to see if you will threaten his status with the hens. as far as his hen skills...they should improve as he and the hens mature. With youngsters there always seems to be a good amount of drama while they get things figured out.

But.... if he attacks for no reason or he injures a hen it will be time to seriously consider replacing him. I would give him a 'time frame' to settle (unless their is a safety issue which precludes it) and go from there.

Good afternoon all,

My new flashlight has arrived....a TK-60, will have to test tonight but it looks really bright when turned it on ...this should be just what the doctor ordered for candling chocolate eggs!!!

Wondering if anyone has heard from Silkie lately? I sent her a pm, but it looks like she hasn't been on byc since Sept 9!

I wish you were closer I would be giving you chicks and eggs all the time, hugs too!

@dheltzel. Sorry to be a pain, but I am just curious as to what breed these two are. There were two dark eggs in the batch you sent, but I'm pretty sure they were Marans, I think I have one blue Marans, and one Black. Both seem to be females so far. So the mystery chicks with the bare legs might be? :pop

Yes, all the cochins will have feathered feet, noticeably more than the Marans (who have a few feathers down their legs). I don't recall what eggs I gave you, any of these have white spots on their heads?

Here are two quick pics I snapped. Sorry for the poor lighting, I just grabbed them from under Mama. I believe the other brown chick (the third one, not shown in these pics) is a female Rhodebar. It doesn't matter what breed these are, I'm just curious. :D. Thanks for your help!
