@dheltzel . Sorry to be a pain, but I am just curious as to what breed these two are. There were two dark eggs in the batch you sent, but I'm pretty sure they were Marans, I think I have one blue Marans, and one Black. Both seem to be females so far. So the mystery chicks with the bare legs might be?

They sure look like Rhodebar pullets to me. Definitely not Marans. The colors aren't quite right for a Welsummer, but if they came from a dark egg, they are either Welsummers or Welbars. I don't recall what eggs you got, but I've had a perpetual surplus of Rhodebar eggs, they are the most productive of all the breeds I have now. I had problems with them not hatching that well, and a high percentage of males (10:1 one week!). But Rhodebar pullets are gems, very underrated, IMO.

Does anyone here breed bantam cochins? If so, which color?!

I'm currently breeding barred and black bantam Cochin.

Has anyone tried to cross a double barred over a red?

I have some cochin bantams, all mixed colors.

Did you know you have the breeds to make black sex-linked cochin bantams? Take your barred hens and put a black roo over them. The male chicks will have white spots on their heads and develop barring on their wings at just a few days of age, the females will remain pure black. One of the big problems with bantams is that the chicks are almost always sold straight run. Cochins are adorable pets, but taking a chance on getting roos is just not workable for many people. I think you would find a definite market for the female chicks if you did this.

Thank you! If you want them back, just let me know.

I just met a lady on Craigslist to pick up some empty chicken bags for making grocery bags. We were talking chickens and she said she had gotten some chickens from a gentleman that works in KOP. Haha! Dheltzel is the poultry pimp for MontCo & BucksCo.

Penelope still hasn't laid her egg. She doesn't like to come out of the cat/dog carrier. She is eating and drinking and popping and still swollen. It is going to be 2 weeks on Saturday.

My hubby wants to build a chicken barn and tear down all we have build over the years raising chickens. That means he wants to sell off all we have and just keep my silkies. He knows how much I love my silkies

He wants to restart after we get every thing built. He has in his mind a huge coop for everyone sectioned off into groups/breeds. He wants to order new chicks from the feed mill we go to. Had me looking if I had the paper from last year.. I did. I seen they had Cuckoo Marans. My Marans are my best layers right now, either 1 or 2 eggs from them a day, I have 2 of them that are 3 years old. I seen they had some Araucanas too. I think I would be able to make my own olive eggers if I get some straight run chicks. So much to do and so little time sigh. I love the darker eggs and the blue eggs.

Last year the feed mill offered in layers: Rhode Island Reds, Barred rocks, Black sex links, White Leghorn, Gold sex links. Fancy breeds: assorted bantams, Araucanas, Danish Brown Leghorns, Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, New Hampshire Reds, White Rock, Mottled Anconas Black or Buff Minorcas, Delawares, Naked Neck Turkens, (hubby hates the look of these lol) Black Jersey Giants, Dominiques, White Laced Red Cornish, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Light Brahmas, Cochins, and Cuckoo Marans. So many choices.

If we ever get the new coop build, I will post pictures lol. He has been talking about doing a big new coop for a while now. He did score some free metal for the roof. We were talking about using pallets to build the walls. We will have to level out the back yard, which isn't easy with all the rocks and trees. Lots of work needs to be done.

When I bring chicks to work to meet customers here, my coworkers love to look at them. Then the comments start about me "selling chicks" in the parking lot, or how I keep chicks in my basement until I sell them . . .

So many jokes . . .
