Well, just sold 7 of our 'teenagers'.... mixed emotion day...like cleaning out the coop and getting the money back for feed but sure miss having them running around. I hadn't advertised them yet but 2 ladies who bought from us before called me last week wanting to know if we had any available and these girls were very ready, these ladies live in central pa and work together and are willing to travel to get the birds, so I can be comfortable knowing they value their birds... I had just been dragging my feet about getting them advertised since camping season wasn't over and most folks want to meet on weekends to look at birds.
The ladies had fun choosing which hens they wanted and I enjoyed visiting with other chicken folks for a bit and these chickens are going to have a spoiled rotten life out in central pa... so I guess much more good than sad...

So time to go get pictures of the newest additions to get smiling again....

Well, better than the auction, never quite got to the point of selling chicks or hatching eggs....(the fox saw to that)...so I am pretty much in a holding pattern til next spring....guess that will be the 'decision' making time....I don't know the calculus, but, certain little ones just aren't for selling (I may be a chicken hoarder in training)

That can be hard. I know I have to rehome my little chicks, but I love seeing them run around the yard! What am I going to do with out the cuteness? Maybe I'll keep just one... You know it's too late, we already nicknamed one...

It is hard to sell....after worrying about their safety and well being for so long it is strange to let them go.... I could easily hoard a lot of birds if we had more property and fewer broodies...but with hens hatching every other week (or more often) it is just a matter of practicality. I do think keeping them till they are older and pricing them higher as teens helps weed out folks looking for cheap livestock or meat.
DH is worse than me sometimes though...he picks favorites from almost all the hatches and they are even harder to let go after he spoils (and names) them!

I just posted this in the emergency forums but I'm going to copy and paste here too for the local experts to look at.

I just noticed that my girl, Ariel, has a swollen foot this morning. I don't know if it's been like this for a while or not. Has anyone dealt with this before or know what to do for her?

It's only her right foot and it does not feel like it's a fluid filled blister at all but more stiff. She's not a big, heavy girl. She's a smaller golden comet or RSL. She usually free ranges all day, one of the first ones out and last ones in at night. She and her sister stick together and travel far and wide. Right now, I have her in some warm water with lavender oil, soaking. She's going to be upset with me but she's going in a crate for a few days. I'll probably bring her sister, Daffodil, in to stay with her. Is there anything else I should do for her to help? Does anyone have any clue what it is?

adding, just remember if you decide to cut it out.... IT IS STAPH SO COVER YOUR EYES AND USE EVER PRECAUTION TO PROTECT YOURSELF and others from spread, because sometimes it takes alot of pressure to pop it out and it can fly like a bullet. fair warning

we have but not on purpose, we made apple cider, put it into a old refri. and didn't drink it, really forgot about it since we didn't go into the refri that much, anyway, first it turned into hard cider or applejack the vinegar. still have some applejack from last fall that hasn't turned into vinegar yet

I can confirm CCL girls going broody....and hatching...maybe a fluke...or not....IDK....if a breed didn't go broody. there wouldn't be a breed...my two cents

Ours go broody all the time at around a year old, nasty boogers too

Not specifically for winter but timing usually has us selling most in the fall since the broodies are most active during late spring to early summer. We have a handful of hens who only brood once a year and it is during that time. Luckily we don't have trouble selling the pullets, an occasional young rooster gets lucky enough to find a new home and the rest are usually big enough to be butchered by late fall.
we sold a group of youngsters in January of this year and when I advertised them I had more replies than birds the first day. I try to be careful about what birds, if any, we hold back from sale. They have to have a very particular reason....if we kept everyone we liked because it was cute or friendly we would be overrun in no time!

X2 on it looking like bumblefoot...

X3, bumble foot. I wonder if anyone has ever tried a Tea Tree oil soak with bandage for that? I have used tea tree oil for so many different things!

Sally, you're creeping me out with all those gifs in your profile picture.
