Throwing a chicken train update here since it's just been mentioned and it's more efficient than a bunch of separate PMs... I was hoping to make some stops on my way east on Friday the 30th and then a few stops on my way back west on Monday. Turns out my niece's birthday party is Friday night and my kids school Halloween parties are Friday morning so I'll be racing from one thing to the other with no stops on Friday. I'm going to look at the places on a map and figure out a new plan... I do have to get down to Chiques chicks at some point before I leave (probably Saturday morning) because he has some chickens for my sister, so I'll see what I can do on Saturday morning and which route I can take to hit the rest on my way out. Will send out messages as it gets closer and I figure out my routes.

I hope my chickens are all okay tonight. Haven't had any predator issues since I started locking the foster chickens up in plastic crates every night, it's a hassle to go out so late (have to put my kids to bed first so sometimes it is really late), but it keeps them safe. Tonight I went out and found my main coop empty! The run door had slid closed - my oldest let them out this morning and must not have anchored the pull sting down. So the chickens were locked out of the coop and sleeping in the tree in the run. Three of the girls were actually on the ramp and the water bucket next to the ramp so I opened the door and put them in, I tried to get Romeo out of the tree but I couldn't reach him well enough to pick him up, I only succeeded in knocking him down and he took cover under the coop where I can't reach him. All of the other girls were too high up in the tree. We've had a lot of losses from birds sleeping in that tree over the summer and I'm afraid for them.

Also, anyone have any experience with a chicken scratching around in the nest boxes? For the last week or so the straw has been all scratched up and kicked out of the nest boxes and we've been getting broken eggs as a result... The eggs aren't pecked or eaten, they are getting cracked by being kicked around. The straw kicking is taking place in all nest boxes, even the ones that no one uses... Especially the ones that no one uses. What gives?

Hope everyone makes it through the night ok. As for the nest boxes, do you have any pullets who may be getting ready to come into lay? I've noticed that when some of my girls start exploring the nest boxes, they can really tear them up and make messes out of them.

I'm sorry she didn't make it.

I have lots of extra CCL chicks if you think you can sneak a few into your house. Maybe they can hitch a ride with someone going that way.

If anyone has a broody (or running incubator) and wants some hatching eggs, let me know. I hate the idea of putting CCL eggs into the fridge to sell for $3 a dozen. It seems like they deserve a better fate than that . . .

I'm sure I'll have another broody soon. I think my 3 girls are going to be constantly cycling. Will let you know!

They are right around 5.5 months old.

Probably just need a few more weeks. Are there wattles and combs reddening up? That usually means eggs are coming soon.

Recorded the turkeys for a little bit yesterday. They were playing and flying around like crazy until I stated recording lol. Then they thought that the camera was more fun to stare at :)

Does anyone else have any chickens that like small spaces, or like to hide? I looked outside to find Hennifer Lopez under a pile of feed bags (soon to be made into grocery bags)

I have often found my her underneath something, making a soft purring clucking noise. I'm thinking this is maybe some broody instincts creeping up, but never fully developing? I have also noticed, if I put a few eggs in front of her, she seems compelled to tuck them under her. I would love to have her go broody, but I doubt it will happen, given that she is a hatchery chick who is almost 2 years old.,

So does anybody have any ideas on how to get my girls (chickens, not wife and daughter) to get with the program and stop being freeloaders?

Just patience! ;) What are you feeding them? Do you have supplemental light? What breed of chicken? Do you have golf balls or ceramic eggs in the boxes for encouragement? Are there any signs of reddening wattles and combs or nesting boxes looking "messed up"?

The anticipation is killer, but they will lay soon!

I like hatching eggs in the fall. They grow all winter and are ready to lay first thing in spring.

Me too!! I try to have a couple batches so some start laying in the spring, others start in the fall! Makes up for some of the old diners slowing down!

Yes! In my lily's when her favorite box is taken by a broody or in the hay bin! She's an every day olive layer so I know when I'm not getting eggs to go on an egg hunt!

. That always stinks, even if it's expected.

@barbiegirl . How is your Penelope? (hope I got the name right)

That **** hawk was out today. When I went to look outside, it was just sitting on the ground waiting for the chicks to come out from under the Hosta. Thankfully, their Mama has taught them well and they are excellent at hiding.

Anne:

My two cents, but keep an eye out, that hawk may stick around for a day or two, and I'd guess if it was migrating more of its type will be flying through....my two cents...
