Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hey there PA friends! Thanks for the great advice given on where to get chickens locally. I thought I would pick some brains this morn. I am having trouble getting my girls to in the coop at night. When it gets dark, they come and peck at the back door. I have ramp to the coop that they come down but they just won't go back.I tried locking them in the coop for a few days(with food and water of coarse) put treats out and up the ramp but at 6:00 pm tap, tap, tap. I physically have to put them up the ramp. Any ideas?

My chickens are very good about putting themselves to bed, but sometimes, especially if we are going out I want them in earlier. I have them trained (Very easy, just use repetition.) that when I whistle and shake a can filled with cracked corn, mealworms and other chicken goodies they come running because they are going to get a treat. I throw handfuls in their coop and they race in, no matter the time.
You can start by when they are already in the coop, call to them, shake your can or whatever you have and toss treats in. Soon they will be running to greet you.

yes, I saw a British man do that on YouTube. I put pumpkin seeds in a can and rattled it while saying bok bok bok and they looked at me like "Hey crazy lady we aren't going anywhere." Maybe I need better treats!

How's that ccl roo doing Auroradream?

He's still coughing and gagging. I don't think it's from his ride in the car though. I'm giving him till Sunday and if he's still having respiratory issues, I'll cull him. I took a chance this spring and treated a roo with the same issues and integrated him. I ended up losing some of my favorite birds when it spread but I managed to stop it. I don't take any chances anymore. I do still have a young CCL roo growing out.

Hi I just wanted everyone to know the chickens from the chicken train are doing awsome I know I'm supposed to keep them separated for two weeks but where I keep them the other birds could see them and get close to them even tho I hust them many times and they were just so cooped up and looked at the others enviously as they were out foraging that I dceded to let them out together. I know everyone says that's a big no no but around here we have never done quarantines and we have never had a problem I guess we are just blessed when it comes to chicken health. They integrated into my flock very easily except the new orpington rooster who is terrified of my old rooster who is a whopping three pounds on his heavy days lol. It is quite comical to watch. As soon as my old rooster gets close the new rooster which I named lone ranger runs away screaming like he was attacked. The hens fit in right away and the red one I named geegee follows me around no matter where I go when I'm out with them. The bantams are doing great to. They have there very own pen right now I don't want the big birds to hurt them I named the hen baby and the rooster is Shwayze and I wanted emorems0 to know they are just as loved. I know it may take a few days for every to start laying after traveling but I was wondering how often she lays an egg I think you said they were a year old I'm not very experienced with bantam hen. Again I want to thank emorems0 for transporting the chicken n the bantams and ChickieChicks for the others. I'll post pictures tomorrow if I get a chance.

Thanks to all of you who chimed in with advice about getting my chickens in at night...you're all genius! I showed them snacks in the coop when I left. My son and I put a Halloween light in the coop before dark then left. When I came back at night there were no chickens at my back door- they were all snug in the coop. We left the light in there. Now it looks like they are watching TV.Thanks again all!!!!!!

Glad they went in for you at night. You do want to make sure that you turn the light off once they're all snug in bed so they can get their beauty sleep ;)

Glad to hear it worked. Like Aurora said be sure to turn out there light after they are all tucked in. Do that for a couple days and they should start going in by themselves with no light.
