They will eat plain grass and love it. Watch for weed killers and fertilizers on plants and yards.

They will be hunting for bugs and termites, etc. In a wood pile. They dig in leaves too.

Gotta find those delicious bugs!

Looks like we have a huge yard need to be fenced. Bet DH will hate me for this.

We have a 10x30 chain link fenced run covered by welded fence on top and having the lower 3ft (and underground 1ft) wrapped by hardware cloth. (Actually, the run is not there yet. we have the materials ready but still need to set up the run.) They will stay in the run when we are not at home and free range a couple hours in the evening.

It's a good idea to just do one part a time!

I forgot to mention that both neighbors' yards on the sides are weed-free. Really nice lawns, now I'm gonna ruin the beauty with my chicken fodder

The neighbor in the back has a wood yard, so I don't think chickens will visit their place.

Chickens love the woods. Ours have woods and lawn and weedy banks to pick from...they walk through the yard, spend a little time investigating the weedy areas and head for the woods and powerline behind the house. I know all flocks are different, but I wouldn't rule out the woods at all.

I'm not saying they all do, but some certainly do so you should keep it in mind when planning your areas.

Got another question for you experienced chicken lovers. Bridget is done with her molt, looks great. Even more of a Speckled Speckled Sussex. Neat how that changed. When will she start laying again? How much time is there generally between molt and eggs?

In other Frickin Chicken (my coop's name) news: Dupli is crowing. He and Zippy seem to be getting along great, they were laying down side by side in the pine needle mulch. All 4 babies make me herd them into the coop at night. The big girls still intimidate them, I think.

Mine are constantly in the woods. Our yard is bordered by state game lambs across the back and there's a good syrup of words on each side between us and our neighbors. They basically have a clubhouse under a group of pines and numerous dust bathing spots inside the tree line. Not to mention all the bus they can find under the fallen leaves.
