. Hey there neighbor, most of my pullets have just come into lay so I'm not interested in downsizing right now, but I may know someone who is, PM me if you're still looking.I'm in west chester/west goshen. I really need a nice temprement hen (or other compatible critter) to be a companion for my sweet sweet hen who is all by herself. My cat loves hanging with her, but now that it is cooler he doesnt want to go out. Can anyone help me?
No roosters please I dont want her hurt
Troyes, are you still moving? They are gorgeous as always.
Yes. December 16th is our moving date.
. Marans and Orpingtons are supposed to be broody, but I have never, not one time, had either my Marans or Orpingtons set for me, I have however, had a white leghorn brood for me -go figure. Having said that, If you're absolutely set on having a broody hatch eggs for you, I just don't think you can go wrong with a Silkie or Bantam Cochin -every one I've ever had has brooded at one time or another. I also hear Langshans are a sure bet, but have never owned any myself. Thanks for all the suggestions of a cold-hardy broody. I've got SLW so I might just stick with them.....unless they don't co-operate. Although I would like to add so Black Laced Red Wyandottes next year and may a Buff Orpington or to if the other birds don't want to sit on eggs for me.
So after a year and a half of having two families under the same roof, my daughter and grandsons have moved out. They have only been gone a day, but the whole environment of the house is different. Quieter, cleaner and sadder. The grass is always greener on the other side, no? Overall a good change for all involved, but still kind of sad. The best part is, they are just up the street.
Has anyone ever had a hen who would come running to you for protection, even over silly things? My Maple doesn't like to be mated and any time a boy starts chasing her down, she runs to me as fast as her fat little body can and jumps on my lap lol. The boys know that once she makes it to me, they have no chance so they walk away. Maple has always "needed" protected in her eyes and has always come running for random things. Now Daffodil is learning from her example and came running to me yesterday. She didn't jump on my lap but ramunsetmy legs. Are my girls just goofy or does everyone have one or two like that?

Auro:
I had my main roo (and a number of girls) get mean with my buff orp (now gone)....I was resolved to keep her and built a second coop...she stayed in there and I add some chicks for company....I insisted on free ranging her under supervision....whenever the roo made a move towards her she ran between my feet and would peck at my legs....after months of this and the chicks growing out, I let them all out to integrate....it took her another month to settle down (same for the roo)...
