My ducks are only about a month older than my chickens. All born this past spring. The ducks blew up yesterday. The chickens are still the same feather here and there you see any other time. I am wondering if my girls are going to explode yet this year, or wait until next year?
@Fisherlady, have the hatch mates of my girls begun to molt?

Right now, we go through about a ton of feed per month. If the savings with bulk feed are enough to pay this back in a year or 2, I think I'll do it. Gonna have to sell a lot of chicks to pay for this (not the mention the contents).

I see people using plastic bin/garbage bin to make this type of feeder:

It seems work very well. You may find even bigger container as a feeder.

I read some articles about duck molt before. It seems that ducks have their big molt starting late spring/early summer after they turn 2 year old, so your ducks shouldn't molt now.

MCC: just a bit of info. most ducks have two major molts a year. once in spring, And the second molt is in fall/early winter. sort of shedding pointless feathers and creating a new coat for warmth for the winter, etc. for example, now would be a good time. So everything is good. Depending on the breed or enviorment they can molt 3 times a year. it all just depends on the duck so to say

I've not seen that ducks don't molt until after two, Tilly. I'm just taking it in stride. I'm used to chickens molting. I have to admit that I've only had a few (out of about seventy chickens) drop such a pile overnight. I think it's pretty funny. It reminds me of the picture of the dog that tore apart a couch.

My neighbor has the ducks, and they had someone living there who was allergic to sick eggs ( it's real) but was fine with chicken. Of course it was a simple issue to solve with a swap.

Oh, and BTW,

I got these now. Both wethers. Ten week old. Leonard and Sheldon.

Dheltzel, those bulk bins sometimes show up used in Lancaster Farming classified ads. I've also seen a feed bin framed out of wood, sheeted with plywood and wrapped with coil stock to mouse proof it.

Start populating PA with Reese CCLs and it should get paid off pretty quickly.
