Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I need some experienced advice. One of my black copper marans hens that I've had separated and waiting for eggs to be infertile so I can breed is suddenly having problems. She was fine yesterday but today, when checking for eggs, she was laying on her side in the nest, breathing raspy and heavy. I picked her up and brought her in immediately. She was weak, keeps falling asleep, and spit up some clear fluid a couple times. At first, she seemed to not be able to even hold herself up. Hubby and I gave her a 1/2 cc of penicillin. Now, she's wrapped in a towl on my lap. She keeps dropping in and out of sleep but she's holding her head up on her own right now, her breathing seems almost back to normal. She seems a bit pale on her face but her comb looks fairly normal (it looked slightly blue tinged when I first found her like that). Any clues what this could be? Is penicillin a good choice of treatment? I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing. This is a new one for me.

Update: not 10 minutes after writing this, she went into convulsions and passed away :(

So sorry you lost her! :hugs

I didn't find much though I've never opened up a hen before. We've butchered plenty of roosters. Her abdomen was filled with clear water. Heart looked normal. Liver seemed large and so did the gallbladder. The ceca were both full and kinda greenish. I'd never even noticed the ceca in any butchered roosters but they were very obvious in her. Is that normal? Other than that, I didn't see anything else. Her crop was normal besides being almost empty, no sour smell.

Almost sounds like congestive heart failure. I'll have to look up the acistes and read bout so I know for the future.

If anyone is looking for something to do this month, I have two ideas for you!
First, The Salvation Army is always looking for individuals or groups to ring a bell at the kettle!
Second, food banks always like to receive food donations, but they don't have the funds to buy toiletries for people. A donation of toilet paper, deodorant, band aids, shampoo... are all great to give! Also, due to the shortage of turkeys this year, a frozen turkey would be appreciated too!

Good morning everyone! Hope you'll have a fantastic and productive day!

Want some CCL's that lay olive eggs? I'm getting a few a day from the second "wave" of pullets I raised last year and they are all olive. No idea what the hatchlings will lay.

This guy is for sale. He has become to aggressive for my family he has chased my wife and kids. I don't need them hurt when they are collecting eggs. If anyone is interested please reply. He is only 8 months old

Today I completed my first gleainging! A farm nearby had many leftover pumpkins in the field, so I asked I could buy some. The gentleman there said I could take them but they were all rotten. I took my chances and found a bumper crop! I think I grabbed 20 small pumpkins and a nice big one also. My girls will have something to work on when there is snow and there is not to peck!

Also got a bale of try from someone ho left it at their curb for the trash men. Yesterday I picked up some pumpkins also from someone's trash as well. One benefit to living in suburbia is people throw away nice things. My shed has unite a few pumpkins ready for the winter. I figure they should last so long as they are not rotting yet or touching in storage. Thumbs up if you're a trash picker too!

:thumbsup

you go....Just throw one pumpkin up in the air and let it break on the ground......they'll get after the rest ,,,,

An Olive Egger rooster. We bought a dozen eggs that were supposed to be black copper Marans and out of the only egg that hatched this is what we got. Obviously an Americauna cross, maybe he'll help us get some Olive Eggers.
