My day actually went better than I thought it would. That is pretty sad considering I just got home from the emergency vet. Eight years ago my sister's dog bit my dog in the eye. That dog ended up going blind due to a misdiagnosis from the vet. So when I happen to end up with my sister for a few hours today and her new dog bit my dog in the eye, we ended up having to go to the vet. He will be fine. I'm keeping a better watch on this dog. Fortunately, he will be seeing his regular vet in two weeks. And this vet actually thought that the last dog should have had surgery. I should have listened, but they weren't his regular vet.

Poor baby, I hope he will be feeling better soon.

I was just checking his eye. I am not sure, but it seems more swollen! If it were like a black eye, I understand swelling, but not the eye itself! I am going to take another look in a few minutes, and maybe call the emergency vet.
The problem with this place is that it is hit or miss as far as the care you get. I wasn't given any paper on how to give drugs, what to look for. It was only common sense (and reassurance from the internet) that I thought about nausea and lethargy from the drugs.

Where the heck is Stake? I know others are missing, but he is the one I can think of right now. Of course I am wondering about Wingstone, but someone reports on her now and then. LMP was supposed to check in a few months ago. Since I spoke to her on the phone, I know why she isn't on here, but still wish she would check in!

I started lighting about Thanksgiving and the lights come on now from 3 - 8 AM. That seems to have started the ones that are old enough. A lot are only about 5 months now, so the production should pick up even more next month.

The "Reese Legbars" are a show line of Cream Legbars created by Jill Reese in the UK and imported by Greenfire Farms a few years back. In typical GFF fashion, the first year chicks were $199 for a pullet and $149 for a cockeral. A lot of people wanted a cockeral to put over their flock and bring more cream and better cresting into the chicks. I will post some pics of the month old pullets I have in the basement now. The Reese birds have consistently good crests, unlike the other CCL's I have.

GFF is selling pullet chicks for only $29 now, but it still makes for an expensive purchase with shipping added. I plan to flood the market this year

They really are great little birds. Cute and good layers. The pullets look to be about half the weight of the Beilefelder pullets, yet their eggs are essentially the same size (for now).

Alrighty then, so 'Reese' is just referring to the line, not a different breed. Got it. I'm way behind on my CCL knowledge, these are a show line? Does that mean that the CCLs have been accepted into the Standard? I heard some buzz a few years ago about breeders trying to get them accepted, but I didn't think they'd been In the country long enough to be accepted into our Standard. Has this happened? I haven't seen any at shows yet. Maybe there will be some at the Massachusettes Show we're going to next month.. e

I'm also getting a lot of turkey eggs now. 3-4 daily. 4 of my six girls are in production mode now. I have 18 so far, sitting on my counter and ready to go in the bator tomorrow. I'm guessing that I'll have about 22 by tomorrow to set

Sweet! This is so exciting. I keep thinking I'll ask you for eggs, then i remember how tough it is to brood birds inside...

I 'think' both Stake and Wing are working a lot right now, but I'm not positive. I saw on FB that Wing got hit especially hard by a predator recently, the damage was quite extensive, such a shame.

In the US they are not accepted by the APA yet. However, there is a dedicated group of breeders that are showing them in an attempt to get them accepted.

. I'm not sure how that works... How do you show them if they're not accepted?

So much mud and manure at a farm. Cleaned a lot of pens today. I put down lime and some fresh straw, then got to see some very happy chickens scratching through the straw and bathing in the dust they made.

The Reese Cream Legbars are really laying well - 5 eggs from 6 pullets yesterday, then today, none. Funny how they seem to coordinate their day off with each other. Set 16 eggs last week and will be setting 20 more tonight.

The Welbars finally started to lay this week also. I lost track of when they were hatched and felt frustrated that they were taking so long to lay, but when I checked the hatching records I found they were at least a month younger than the Bielefelders, and those just came into lay. I think most of the WB pullets were not hatched until June, so they are about 6 months old, about when Welsummers come into lay. The eggs are super dark, just like the best Welsummers, but the pullets are larger and calmer. They look like Bielefelder pullets, but with dark eggs, exactly what I was hoping for. Assuming they autosex clearly, they are my new favorite breed (for this week - I'm so fickle, last week it was the Bielefelders, and the week before the Reese Legbars).

The turkey are starting to lay well too, getting 4 or 5 eggs a day now.
