Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

This is day 21 for my broody Silkey, nothing yet.
I can sympathize...broodies are wonderful except for hatch time....it is SO frustrating when you can't see what is going on! Hopefully you will have pics to share soon though.

Well Hello! I am here to introduce myself to fellow PA chicken keepers. I am from Schuylkill County, just moved to the country and I'm looking forward to having chickens for the first time (they come in April!!) Please feel free to message me and introduce yourself. Looking forward to getting to know more about chickens !
Welcome to the fun! Glad to have you here, where did you move from? Everyone here has great advice, beside to listen! :D
Cuteness Alert! Janeway had another hatch, cold weather made it strange, she hatched from Sunday night through Tuesday, nearly a 42 hour from first to last, which is odd for broodies when all the eggs were set at the same time... but she did 7/7, she had an early quitter and a non-starter that were pulled on the 10 day mark... one to hatch was unexpected, since the air cell was on the side of the egg, but it made it on it's own and we can't even tell which of the last 3 it is (the last 3 hatched while we were at work).... so without further rambling... all are barnyard mixes...
Awesome as always Fisherlady! They look so cute. They are not barnyard mixes, they are Hardy Naturally Selected Stock! ;). One day I hope to get a few of the penciled chickens from you, they're so gorgeous! Do you find they go broody frequently?
Welcome from Chester County PA! My girls (my first chickens ever) just starting laying this week and we are thrilled! They are funnier and sweetier pets than I ever could imagine!
*UPDATE* it is in fact feather picker/eaters. I caught 4 of my girls in the act and they are now preying on a second girl as well :-( How can I stop this behavior? ?? So far I picked up a big bag of black oil sunflower seeds to help with their protein. How much of this should I be feeding?
I agree, let them free range if possible and make sure to give them plenty of protein. Hey guys, I've been absent for a little bit, the grief from my Mothers passing is hitting me hard now. I feel like because of all of the trauma and stress surrounding her passing it has left me with brain damage. But I'm sure it's temporary. In chicken news, I brought my broody and turkey baby in the house when we had that wicked cold snap, and I have kept them in since. I tried to let them out one day, but the chick was still too cold and Mama didn't seem to be keeping it warm enough. Probably this weekend I will let them out for the day when it warmer. I am also concerned about my neighbor's stupid cat. So for now, my husband doesn't mind. A banty Cochin is perfect house chicken, small and calm.

thanks, they are definitely hardy stock, the yellow ones (white rock or light sussex crosses, most likely) are super sized and about the size of cornish cross meat birds, hoping they get to at least their parent stock's size. Time will tell.
And yes, my silver pencil rocks go broody frequently, lacey brooded 4 times in the past year, all the others once or twice.
