This remind me the movie "Delivery Man". That guy has 533 kids!I know. I'm very pleased, I guess experience is a real asset when faced with 31 females![]()
I only wished I had made the switch earlier. Oh well, in about 2 weeks I have 93 eggs hatching all from that 1 roo. That should get me caught up on all the orders for the sexlinks, and then some.
I don't think the Lavender roo is gettin any lovin from the ladies, but he seems to be taking things very philosophically. It may be that maturity comes late to the silkied birds. I was looking over his younger siblings and I think I am going to have only 4 hens, 2 lav and 2 black split to lav. I'm thinking about what sort of tractor to build them that is well protected from the weather, yet will get them the fresh greens they want.
I heard peeping!!
thanks, they are definitely hardy stock, the yellow ones (white rock or light sussex crosses, most likely) are super sized and about the size of cornish cross meat birds, hoping they get to at least their parent stock's size. Time will tell.
And yes, my silver pencil rocks go broody frequently, lacey brooded 4 times in the past year, all the others once or twice.
I heard peeping!!
*UPDATE* it is in fact feather picker/eaters. I caught 4 of my girls in the act and they are now preying on a second girl as well :-(
How can I stop this behavior? ??
So far I picked up a big bag of black oil sunflower seeds to help with their protein. How much of this should I be feeding?
Thanks!![]()
That sounds like you have a one two punch. Do you still buy chicken at the store? Or do you process enough to have on hand?
That's so exciting! Under a broody, right? Hope we gee some pics soon!

I buy cornish x meaties once or twice a year to process and split between our freezer, my Mom's and my step son's, with a few roasters which go to friends who chicken sit for some of our longer camping trips. We haven't bought chicken at the store in years though, the barnyard mix roosters are big enough to give us great canning chicken and we process for the broth and 'leaf lard' also. The cornish x can't be beat for tender roasting and smoking birds.
I do put a but if braggs vinegar in the water, maybe not enough though? How much do you use? I believe my bucket waterer hold 3 gallons.Ah! I can help you there. I had the same problem a few years back. The solution I found was to put a small bit of vinegar into their water, and just like that, they stopped. Tell me how that works out!
