@Auroradream26 if you still have spare silkies by the time the chicken train meets up in Bedford... oof, I need more birds like I need a hole in the head, but I walked into the TSC today and almost broke. So many Khaki Campells and silkies! I'm glad that your girl found "the one." They're so fluffy and squishable.

I'm glad people are posting pictures of their peeps and all those lovely hatching eggs. It's holding me over until the end of next month :D
 
Who wants to show me what your brooding or breeding pens look like? Or small coop/run areas? I just ordered a 4x8x6h dog kennel to use as the 'run' for a new breeding coop. It's a covered kennel and I'd like to build a little coop inside the kennel for a breeding quad (one roo and 3 hens). I know I want the coop elevated about 2 feet so that I can set up a little brooding area underneath it to help with integration (I have two mature hens destined for that pen and will be adding chicks after Easter). I'm having a hard time finding ideas for a compact coop that has both nest boxes and roosting bars in a small layout (about 4ft x 3ft). All of the breeding pens I see seem to be open air pens with no 'coop' which would be fine for 3 seasons, but not for winter.

This is brooder number 1. It's right beside our bed in our room. This is where they go right after they hatch and stay there for up to 3 weeks at most.

TSC right now (or soon) will have them for about a hundred. They are cheaply made, and you will have to modify it soon. I am sorry I bought two of a similar one, but I won't tell you not to get it.
I can't be sure, but I believe that one is like mine in that the roost is two inches off the floor, and the nest box is behind it, and too drafty.
Again, I may not be pro this coop, but don't go by just me.

As far as cost, Walmart online charges $220 for the coop TSC charges $200 for daily, and $100 during Chick days. The guy isn't trying to gyp anyone. He may have actually paid that much.

The laundry bag is an excellent idea. I know that there's at least one of those laying around here. They may be 2.time to dig through hubby's army stuff lol.

I use the hatch a batch app and keep my detailed notes on that plus I keep a hard copy in a notebook to keep track of hatch percentages, quitters and clears.

Our Dollar Tree has the laundry bags, 3 for $1. I also get rubberized shelf liner from there to line the hatch baskets. That helps contain the mess and they soak and clean up more easily.

I was thinking the same, but the idea of no work/time needed to set up was pretty enticing, especially if it is cheaper. My decision was made for me though, the kennel already shipped so too late to cancel that order now! Looks like I'll be building again in the next few weeks, in addition to re-doing the turkey run and putting a new roof on the main chicken coop (thanks to a couple of big turkeys roosting on it every night).

My poor hatches the last 2 weeks are done with. Pulled 114 chicks already this morning, and there are at least a dozen more drying or nearly out.
Finally I can fill some orders - gonna have some happy customers soon.
