This is getting rediculous!

I came home from Albuquerque Tuesday night... ABQ was 77 degrees. Walking out of Pittsburgh airport into 28ish degrees.. I wanted to run back and rebook an NM flight!
(Side note, my friend lives in the city proper, and I heard a roo every morning. Not until around 8am, though! Laid back city, indeed! lol)

Since I'm new to the chicken thing I'm trying to figure out bedding/litter for in the coop. Being that we are in PA I want to plan ahead for the winter months too. Im leaning toward pine shavings or sand. Pine shavings can get expensive though, right? Sand on the other hand could work, but what about in the winter when it gets cold...will the sand get cold and stay cold? Don't want the girls to be cold. What bedding do you recommend for this area?
I'm a newbie too. I feel pine shavings are better choice, especially if you use deep little method. It wouldn't be expensive at all if using deep little method. Some one add poop board under their roost to help keeping the bedding clean. I heard so many bad things about sand: chickens broke their legs because sand frozen solid; frostbite of their toes; heath issues, etc. , so I decide it's not worth to try it.
