I'm a newbie too. I feel pine shavings are better choice, especially if you use deep little method. It wouldn't be expensive at all if using deep little method. Some one add poop board under their roost to help keeping the bedding clean. I heard so many bad things about sand: chickens broke their legs because sand frozen solid; frostbite of their toes; heath issues, etc. , so I decide it's not worth to try it.


I like our sand floor, but it is more maintenance than deep litter, for sure. It does need a dry floor, any moisture from underneath and it is horrible. Our coops have insulation in the floor and are elevated a bit off the ground so it works for us.
Downside is routine sifting to keep it clean, upsides are great material for birds to scratch through and they even enjoy dust bathing in the coop when weather is miserable outside. It is great for the broodies with chicks, also.
