I talked to her earlier in the season, she has Ko Shamo. I've been looking for ko shamo for years, I was borderline obsessed at one point. Saw a cockerel at a show and was determined to own the stubby-faced, stretched looking things. I'm still waiting for a message from her, as she said she would send me one when they started laying but haven't heard anything yet

My babies have been with me for 2 weeks today. We have 4 flyers that love to perch on the feeder, as Paisley is doing here. I'm watching Gladys, my Cornish Rock bottom right, very closely as I'm beginning to believe she may be a Glenn. There is more comb development than I would like, and I'm really hoping my eyes are tricking me and it isn't getting pinker at its base.

What a beautiful day today! We were super busy all day working outside. We borrowed my dad's truck and picked up a load of mulch. Turns out we'll have to borrow his truck again since one load was nowhere near enough. We also picked up some 6 x 8 ft fence posts from tractor supply to use for raised boxes and had 5 tons of top soil delivered. We didn't even get to that before hubby had to go to work. The chickens were quick to discover the new mulch and promptly started digging in it :/ I'm still waiting for them to notice the giant pile of dirt in the garden lol.

Tomorrow, we're making a trip that I really don't want to make. My Pappy has a friend that owns a chicken farm that he's just dying to take me to and show me. I guess this guy has 10,000 chickens (laying hens) supposedly free range. My aunt was there and said that they all have their beaks trimmed and have minimum coop space (not surprised). She said that I'm not going to like it. Pappy is so excited to show me but I really don't think he has any clue. It's going to be so hard not to cry but I have to try my hardest not to. Pappy isn't in the best health and has been in and out of the hospital a lot lately and I don't want to show that I'm upset over it all. Wish me luck. I'll have to report back on how it was.

You are a good granddaughter to do that for your Pappy. :hugs

I spent a few hours today in the company of a lady I just adore...she's nearly 70 and lost her husband last year, she had some older hens which needed culled, so we had a good catch up gab session and processed 6 of the oldest hens, I am going back Monday to finish the rest, I was out all night on emergency calls and just didn't have it in me to do a 6 hour marathon session.
 
I lost my little Red Ranger tonight.

I'd been worried through the week because she seemed to be keeping apart from the group, being less active and not growing like the others. My guess would be failure to thrive. As all the others seem to be progressing as they should, is there reason to worry about them?

People that tie flies can be rather snobbish about their materials - they are "ar-teests" ya know. I don't care about tying flies, but the long soft hackle and saddle feathers are quite unique compared to regular chicken breeds.

In my experience, both Marans and Welsummers make the best "flock roos". They seem particularly concerned about protecting and caring about their hens. And they get big and strong enough to give some predators pause. I heard a story of one of the Welsummers I sold as a chick charging a hawk that had landed on one of his hens. Scared the %^$% out of the hawk apparently, and I can believe it, they are tall and imposing even when standing still, and Marens are of the same stature and similar nature. I've never had either get aggressive with me, whereas the tiny (by comparison) Legbars always seem to want to challenge me - I think they must feel like Napoleon, too short to matter much. I laugh when a Legbar comes at me, but if one of my mature Marans attacked that could get dicey, so I'm glad if someone if going to get feisty, it's the little dudes.

You should keep that Marans roo, at least until you see how he is mannered.

My blue hens don't show much copper, I'm glad their daughters picked up better coppering from their dad. Without copper they don't look any different than an Austrolorp with razor stubble.

Well, I had a "B" line CCL Roo from Jordan Farms and he was as good as it gets...unfortunately a fox took him protecting his girls....probably not show quality but on all other levels....

Sometimes that happens...its never a good feeling....no real opinions except to watch the rest.....if anyone else looks iffy....I'd suggest scrambled eggs,,,,
