Something very bad is going on. I just went to look for today's eggs. I didn't see any. I did smell something dead. It is not that hot today (not sure what happened, but I am not complaining!) so there should not have been a dead broody. There on the floor was Bonnie (the mean one due in a few days) she was not dead. In the box was Stevie. She is not dead. She does contain the stench though. I am going with a chick hatched, and was killed. Or... I have smelled broody poo. I have had a broody with a rotten egg. This really was a dead smell. Any ideas?

There are 3 of them. Gray. Dark. Dark with brown face. Lost one after hatch. Lost two during hatch. 1 has a Crack but dunno if it is active. One feels light. 2 still under hen. 3 is a good number to add to flock.

Not sure on your due date for hatch but could be any of your options listed....only suggestion I have is a bit of Vicks (or menthol type tooth paste) rubbed under your nose, get a nest worth of fresh straw and gloves....lift broodies chests up enough to see under them, if you see broken egg or poo you will need to remove the hen from the nest, pull the eggs and soiled bedding, replace with fresh bedding, put back eggs and let broodies back in. It is a nasty job but not doing it means the other eggs or hatching chicks will be exposed to the bacteria from the mess and may die also.

Break her!?!? Don't say that! LOL :barnie:barnie

Find her a couple of day old chicks and let her get it out of her system! :jumpy

Last time she was broody, I tried that. She wanted nothing to do with them and attacked them :/ that's why Anna got 6 babies. The other two girls refused them. As for Pebbles, she's not a good mom. She tried this earlier in the year and let 6 poults/chicks die. I think I'll slip I've pals under them again. Worked last time lol

Yes, Duckling goes to bed in... Anytime in the next hour. First meltdown, and she goes.
I am pretty sure I have it all worked out. We will see how well I did in my planning. LOL
I am hoping it is an easy fix. I may not need more chicks, but I don't want them all (or mostly) dead.
I don't know if I said there are more than eight eggs, and I swear I saw two Pekin eggs.
:he I think I know what the smell is. We will see if I was right later.

Yeah never know. She could always do better the next time around! You should give her two dozen eggs, and see! :thumbsup

Cookie update:

Today the big lump under her wing changed from deep purple to an ugly green, that is the 2nd picture, the top of her wing has some green too(1st picture), but there is no open holes or oozing. Is this good????? How do I know if this is a large swollen bruise, or an abscess that needs to be broken open??
